A new exhibit at the Bedford Gallery in downtown Walnut Creek, Ned Khan: Seed Vortex, is on display through March 25th.
From the exhibition page:
This winter, the Bedford presents the work of Bay Area sculptor Ned Kahn in a solo show that studies the artists’ lifelong fascination with the confluence of science and art. At the center of the show is Seed Vortex, Kahn’s enormous metal sculpture weighing thousands of pounds and spanning 20 feet in diameter.
Seed Vortex shifts a transient sea of tiny mustard seeds in a slow, constant and captivating spin, addressing life’s puzzles, like eternity, unity, chaos and change. The inspiration for Seed Vortex goes back to the 1980s when Kahn was an artist-in-residence at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. There, he explored the Physics of the Granular State, an emerging field of science that studied the way powders, sand and other dry, granular materials moved. Kahn created a series of interactive sculptures at the Exploratorium that encouraged viewers to influence and observe the patterns of granular motion. This work led to Negev Wheel, which Kahn made in 2016 for the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco and filled with sand from Israel’s Negev Desert.

Village Square Shopping Center, Orinda
Thanks to a reader for pointing out that the Village Inn Cafe is closing this Sunday, January 28th in the Village Square shopping center in Orinda according to this News 24/80 article. The current owners have been in business for over 30 years since 1986. Check out their interesting story here.
From their website:
The Village Inn Cafe, located then in a narrow space in the Village Square Shopping Center was purchased by Kurt & Kathy Bellows in December of 1985. They cleaned it thoroughly, installed some new equipment, changed the menu and opened on January 6th 1986.
The restaurant was immediately successful, and business grew steadily. After eight years, Kurt & Kathy had an opportunity to relocate St. Helena. They sold the restaurant in August of 1994. St. Helena was not a good fit for them, and fortunately the Village Inn Café was not a good fit for the new owner. Kurt and Kathy were able to buy back the restaurant and returned in February of 1995. This hiatus turned out to be a very costly six month vacation.

Now that the $35,000 electric Tesla Model 3 model is being displayed at the Tesla showroom at Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek there have been major lines outside waiting to get a closer look.
From the Model 3 website page:
Model 3 is a smaller, simpler, more affordable electric car. Although it is our newest vehicle, Model 3 is not “Version 3” or the most advanced Tesla. Like Model S, it is designed to be the safest car in its class.

Thanks to a reader for sending word that the olive oil shop and wine bar We Olive is closing in downtown Walnut Creek after eight years in business. Over the weekend everything in the store was 20% off.
From an email:
We have had an ongoing love story with olives and olive oil for over a decade now. It is what led us to open our little store in downtown Walnut Creek, and what propelled Christine to hone her skills and become part of a sensory panel involved with certifying olive oils. It ultimately, led us to plant our own olive grove. So, it is with some sadness, but with a firm eye toward the future, that we announce our retirement, and the closing of the We Olive Walnut Creek location. We have enjoyed sharing our passion for olive oil with our many loyal guests over the years and are thankful for the new and enduring friendships made during this time.
Our retirement sale starts today!
We are going to celebrate by putting everything in the store on sale! Come in and enjoy deep discounts on everything in the store, while supplies last. Please hurry in! We don’t want to miss the opportunity to thank you personally for supporting us on this amazing journey, while you stock up on all your favorite We Olive products!

Ikoi Sushi opened back in September in downtown Walnut Creek and their signage is up. There used to be a little “IKOI SUSHI” sign on the Rinehart Clock in front but that has been removed, leaving the GELATO text left over from a previous cafe, Honey Berry.
