The restaurant Sasa has appeared on this blog for its side door, its front door, the meat sign on the side wall, and it’s Koi pond so it’s easy to see how it won the Action for Beauty award of excellence last year.
From the Walnut Creek Action for Beauty Council website:
The council, consisting of a group of citizens independent of the city’s political structure, has been issuing design review awards for 40 years. The awards honor projects in architecture, landscaping, and public art. The awards tend to focus on businesses, and how their designs enhance the quality of life in Walnut Creek.
Walnut Creek Action for Beauty Council’s community involvement dates back to the mid 1960’s when we partnered with the Chamber of Commerce on a “Clean-up-Fix-up-Paint-Up” Campaign in 1967 resulting in improvements to many business fronts, landscaping, homes cleaned up, and junk cars removed.
Walnut Creek Action for Beauty Council encourages good design, quality development and landscaping in Walnut Creek. Any citizen can nominate possible candidate projects.
Prominent Architects and Landscape Architects come to Walnut Creek to judge the work of award nominees. Our annual Awards Luncheon presents awards to outstanding projects in the Walnut Creek area to reward and encourage more high quality projects.
Looks like the Neiman Marcus Cafe or “NM Cafe” as noted in the public notice, is planning on offering alcoholic beverages at the restaurant inside. Although “cafe” is stated, I’m not sure whether it will offer more limited cafe fare or more restaurant-type cuisine like what’s available at Nordstrom Cafe.
Last October I posted that Harvest Market had closed and today I was able to get a look inside and found out that it will be reopening in late February with an expanded menu and be open for dinner in addition to lunch. There will be plenty of gluten-free options and all ingredients will be either organic or ‘natural’. In order to handle dinner preparation they now have a massive stove, and added new tables and chairs as well. According to the owner Damian De Larosa, who was previously the GM for McCovey’s restaurant, they plan on helping local artists showcase farm-related and local bay area artwork on the walls which will also be available for purchase.
Has anyone eaten here before it closed? How was it?
Did you know downtown Walnut Creek is home to a payday loan store? It’s located at 1551 Civic Dr., a short hop from Lesher Center. So if you’re looking for a short-term loan after checking out the ballet or theatre at Lesher, look no farther, Cash1 has you covered.
Unveiled Bridal is a local wedding goods store located in downtown Walnut Creek at 1513 Cypress St. They have been in business for over 7 years and offer all kinds of wedding accessories including stationery, bouquet jewelry and more. Take a peek inside their store:
Looks like a great place to check out if you’re planning for a wedding.
A couple of weeks ago some shoplifters were caught in the act at the Walnut Creek Nordstrom; last Saturday it happened again, only this time they got away unfortunately. According to the Walnut Creek police report, “2 YOUNG BF’s”, (?) 19 – 24 years old, one wearing red Abercombie sweats and the other wearing a black leather jacket and jeans exited out the back entrance.

From a press release:
(Walnut Creek, CA) How would you describe dance in 140 characters? Diablo Ballet of Walnut Creek invites Bay Area “text-perts” to break the barriers of dance and Twitter live during the Company’s Friday March 2 7:30 PM at Shadelands Arts Center in Walnut Creek, California.
Bay Area residents are invited to apply to receive a complimentary ticket to sit in the “tweet seat” section” (located in the back of the auditorium), where they can share their immediate thoughts about the performance over Twitter. Each participant’s live tweets will be re-tweeted the night of the performance on Diablo Ballet’s Twitter page (@DiabloBallet) and also via the hash tag #diablo.
“I’m excited to bring this exciting, interactive idea to the world of dance,” said Lauren Jonas, Diablo Ballet’s Artistic Director. “It will be interesting to see how an audience member describes dance in only 140 characters.”
Potential participants must:
-Be age 16 or older
-A Bay Area resident
-Have a portable texting device that can last two hours without charging
-Have an active Twitter account“We thought it would be a fascinating project to see how the art of dance can be described and shared with everyone,” said Lauren. “By using social media, we hope to intrigue and inspire folks to see live dance!”
One aim of the program is to give people a critical voice in the arts. “We’re creating “citizen critics,” says Dan Meagher, Diablo Ballet Director of Marketing. “The power of arts criticism is moving into the hands of everyday people, whose opinions are just as relevant and valid as those of a major critic.”
Diablo Ballet’s March program will feature the West Coast premiere Pas de Deux from Mercurial Manoeuvres by Christopher Wheeldon.
To apply, send your name, phone number, city, and link to your Twitter account to Dan Meagher, Director of Marketing, at Dan@DiabloBallet.org. For more information, visit Diablo Ballet’s website at www.DiabloBallet.org and select “performances” or by clicking here. You may also call their office at 925-943-1775 extension 0. Interested parties must apply by February 22nd. Participation is by invitation only.
