April 28, 2017 11:30 am

2nd Ave. & N. Main St, Walnut Creek

Thanks to everyone who sent word that In-N-Out Burger is no longer coming to Walnut Creek. Last month we learned that a development was planned for the corner of 2nd Ave. and Main St. anchored by In-N-Out Burger but according this SFGate article the developer dropped plans for In-N-Out, “citing neighbors’ “concerns and anxiety”.

Friday Question of the Day – What is your Favorite Local Sports Team?

April 28, 2017 8:30 am

This week we found out that a new Golden State Warriors store will be opening tomorrow in downtown Walnut Creek, conveniently located right next to the Giants Dugout store. Considering how well the Warriors have been doing it’s hard to find someone who is NOT a Warriors fan. I’ve always liked baseball and enjoy going to both AT&T Park for the Giants and the Oakland Coliseum for the A’s.

What is your favorite local team to watch on TV and to see in-person?

Art historian Karen McWhorter discusses a century of art from the American West—from the era of exploration to the end of the frontier in the twentieth century. McWhorter will offer a wide-ranging presentation on western artists active between 1830 and 1930, and will examine the ways in which art was shaped by (and itself shaped) contemporary perspectives on the American West. This talk will draw its subjects and imagery from the collections of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyoming, and will highlight the work of George Catlin, Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington, and Charles M. Russell, among other renowned artists.

Car of the Day

April 27, 2017 11:30 am

Check out this sweet 1959 Chevrolet El Camino, spotted on Hartz Ave. in Danville. Anyone know what that metal thing is sticking out behind the tire? To me it looks like a kickstand, but for a car.

Rebel Art School Opens in Walnut Creek

April 27, 2017 8:30 am

1133 Bont Ln, Walnut Creek

A new art school called Rebel Art School recently opened in Walnut Creek down the street from Monaluna off Mt. Diablo Blvd. In addition to art classes for both children and adults they also offer summer camps and host birthday parties. Find out more on their website here. For background on the owner, Alexandra Harrison, click here. Check out their Facebook page here and Instagram gallery here.

I love the name of this school and their motto, “an art school for the rebels, the rule followers, and everyone in between.” and how the owner believes that, “there is no right or wrong way to make art, and mistakes are merely happy accidents that allow us to discover new ideas, problem solve, and think outside the box.”

From the owner:

We offer a safe and engaging space for kids and adults to be inspired and creative. Classes range from drawing, painting, mixed media, sculpture, to printmaking while focusing on classical and inventive techniques, terminology, and history. Students can choose to attend classes, camps, workshops, as well as parties to come create original artworks with us.

A Plastic Ocean Playing at Town Hall Theatre in Lafayette on April 28th

April 26, 2017 4:30 pm

A Plastic Ocean:

Town Hall Theatre
3535 School St, Lafayette
Friday, April 28th, 2017
7:30pm | $10

Sustainable Lafayette presents a special showing of A Plastic Ocean at Town Hall Theatre. Proceeds will go to Town Hall Theatre’s effort to eliminate the use of plastic bottles in our building.

A feature-length adventure documentary that brings to light the consequences of our global disposable lifestyle. We thought we could use plastic once and throw it away with negligible impact to humans and animals. That turns out to be untrue.

Help Flashlight Books open in Walnut Creek

April 26, 2017 11:30 am

Help Walnut Creek get an independent children’s bookstore by supporting the Flashlight Books Indiegogo campaign here. Check out their Facebook page here. In addition to selling books they also plan to, “host events, create a tutoring space, and run programs for kids and teens.”

From an email:

My name is Shoshana Smith, and I am currently working to open up an independent children’s bookstore in Walnut Creek. We’re running an Indiegogo campaign right now to help raise funds for start-up costs, and I was wondering if it would be possible to have our story and campaign mentioned in your coverage. I think it would be of great interest to the Walnut Creek and surrounding community, and we’d really like to reach out to those community members who would be our future friends and patrons!
