2035 Salvio St, Concord
A few years ago Wild Ox opened in Concord near Todos Santos Plaza in Concord and they have now closed. According to a sign in the window a new Korean franchise restaurant called Mom’s Touch Chicken & Burger will be opening in its place this fall. Stay tuned…
It seems like every other week a new pizzeria or burger joint opens up somewhere in the East Bay. Now, don’t get me wrong, I LOVE pizza and burgers. But there are times I’d like to try something new and interesting. Like a Singaporean dish at the new STIX Eatery opening soon in Concord. Which cuisine do you feel is the most underrated/underappreciated that people should try?

Park ‘N’ Shop, Concord
STIX Eatery, a new restaurant featuring Southeast Asian cooking from Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam is soft opening very soon, possibly this week in the Park ‘N’ Shop center where McDonald’s used to be. Check out their menu here and check for updates on their Facebook page here. This place looks intriguing, I look forward to trying this place out! I’ve had plenty of Thai and Vietnamese food but I don’t believe I’ve ever tried Singaporean cuisine before. What are some recommended dishes to try?
From their website:
Walk through the bustling streets of many a Southeast Asian-city and you’ll find your senses bombarded by the aromas, vibrancy, and the variety of food available. Southeast Asian countries are known for their spiced-infused flavors, perfectly balanced by the use of brighter ingredients like ginger or lime. The use of chili for heat and tamarind for tartness bring a pleasant tang to the cuisine and leaves you wanting more.
The STIX Eatery menu composition: 40% skewers, 60% non-skewer deliciousness, and 100% delectable. As our name suggests, we focus heavily on grilling succulent, well-seasoned meat on sticks. However, in no way does that mean we neglect the quality of the other 60% of our cuisine. We simply want to give our customers as many options as possible–because who doesn’t like variety when it comes to food?
“Suttons” Vacuum, spotted in Concord. There’s just something about vacuum stores that I find interesting.

1358 North Main Street, Walnut Creek
Main St. Kitchen has been open for a couple of years in downtown Walnut Creek and they are going to be expanding next door where Bryn Walker used to be. Look for a fall opening according to the owner. There will be a full liquor bar in their current location and pizzeria and rotisserie next door with expanded seating and a bigger patio. Check out their menus here.
The fennel sausage soup of the day I had a couple of years ago was so delicious I’m glad they’re expanding and look forward to trying more dishes here soon!
1365 N. Broadway, Walnut Creek
A few years ago Mattress Firm bought Sleep Train for $425 million according to this Wikipedia article. Recently all Sleep Train stores have been renamed to Mattress Firm as you can see in the photos of the Walnut Creek store on N. Broadway.
From a marketing point of view, which is the better name, Sleep Train or Mattress Firm? Sleep Train has two syllables while Mattress Firm has three. Sleep describes an action or condition while mattress describes the product. Train has no relevance unless it means one can train oneself to sleep better. Firm could mean a firm mattress which may be off-putting to those who prefer soft mattresses. Or it could mean firm like a company. Confusing!

Earlier this year we learned that the French restaurant La Sen Bistro, based in Concord, was opening in a new location in downtown Walnut Creek where Ottavio used to be and they have now opened. Check out their menu here and also check out photos of the inside after the jump. The back area has great natural lighting thanks to a spacious skylight highlighting the elegant interior. The bread came with a really nice garlic cilantro sauce, I look forward to trying out more dishes here!
