1251 Arroyo Way, Walnut Creek
Blu 42 Sports Lounge, which opened a few years ago near Civic Park in Walnut Creek is in the process of changing management and will become Chicken Pie Shop according to a recent California ABC notice. According to an employee I spoke with they will be featuring a more varied number of dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stay tuned for the menu…
The Veranda, Concord
The shopping center The Veranda is now open in Concord with TJ Maxx having opened over the weekend and Lunchbox Wax opening today. As you can see in the above photo, Toys “R” Us / Babies “R” Us will be having a grand opening party on November 4th. In addition to stores and restaurants that we previously learned would be opening such as Super Duper Burgers, MOD Pizza (opening Nov. 14th), an IMAX movie theater, and Whole Foods 365, Peet’s (big corner spot), Puesto (San Diego-based Mexican), Residual Sugar Wine Bar and Coffee Shop will also be opening here. On top of that, while visiting there I learned that Popbar (gelato on a stick), a ramen spot (possibly Concord Ramen) and a boba cafe will also be opening. There will be 20 Tesla super chargers and Volta chargers. For children there will be a play area (including a Lucky Climber, see photo below) that will turn into an ice skating rink in December. Stay tuned for more stores to open in the coming weeks as well as a party to celebrate the ice skate rink in late November.

Agora at South Main, Walnut Creek
I probably shouldn’t be talking about this, but a fight club is planning to open at the Agora apartment complex in downtown Walnut Creek. According to a recent city planning commission agenda, Omni Fight Club, a kickboxing and strength training instructional fitness studio is looking to occupy a 3,000+ spot next to T-Mobile.
From their website:
Omni Fight Club is for anyone who craves an inclusive, motivating exercise experience. No matter your fitness level, you will be successful here. If you’re looking for an exciting new challenge, look no further, our program delivers unlimited variety and rapid results. You’ll never perform the same routine twice, and our team training format offers a never-ending stream of encouragement and support.
From the Moraga PD:
On 10/30/2017, 4:49 a.m., Dispatch received calls reporting a house fire on Archer Circle. Moraga Police and Moraga-Orinda Fire personnel responded to the scene and found the house at 9 Archer Circle fully engulfed with flames. Firefighters attached the fire and were able to prevent it from spreading to other houses.
Firefighters also rescued one of the occupants of the home. He was treated at the scene by Moraga-Orinda Fire paramedics and transported to John Muir Medical Center where he is being treated for burns. His condition is unknown. The other occupant of the home was able to escape without injury.
At least 9 fire engines and crews from the Moraga-Orinda Fire District and the Contra Costa County Fire District responded to the fire and worked to extinguish it. Fire personnel will be on the scene for most of the day to ensure the fire is out and to investigate the cause of the fire.

Men’s Wearhouse in Plaza Escuela in downtown Walnut Creek is planning on building a separate entrance on Locust St. to their new Joseph Abboud storefront according to a Design Review agenda scheduled next month. Another year, another anniversary for Beyond the Creek. It’s been six years since I started writing this blog and I still enjoy walking around the East Bay finding out what’s new going on and meeting people from around the area. A lot of new development is happening as always with apartment complexes and shopping centers opening all over and new restaurants to enjoy. Even encountering a little snail moseying down a pathway is fun.
Thank you to everyone who has sent in tips and questions over the years; as someone with a full time job it makes it easier to find out what to check for new posts. Thanks also to everyone who has commented or just reads the posts. I look forward to what the next year has to offer in the East Bay! If you have any tips or quality of life issues you’d like featured please send email them to adam[at]beyondthecreek.com thanks!
