Makers Market Opens in Broadway Plaza

Last week we learned that Makers Market, a shop featuring American-made, handcrafted goods would be opening in Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek and they have now opened. They carry a wide variety of really nice looking goods at this location, from handbags to jewelry, clothing, home accessories and plenty more so definitely drop by to check them out if you’re in the area. Set in the beautiful Art Deco Rheem Theater, the PsychoTronix Film Festival is a rare collection of 16mm short films, scopitones*, movie trailers, retro TV commercials, series bloopers, drive-in theater concession stand ads, and much, much more!

Note: *Scopitone is a type of jukebox that plays movies using a 16mm film format and regarded by collectors as the forerunner of music videos. The Italian Cinebox/Colorama and Color-Sonics were competing, lesser-known technologies of the time.

Lark Creek Closes in Walnut Creek

Thanks to everyone for sending word that Lark Creek has closed in downtown Walnut Creek. Although the sign said, “closed for scheduled maintenance”, and a peek inside showed they were taking inventory, alas, they were closed for good. Yankee Pier in Lafayette owned by the same group, remains open. I wonder if all the new restaurants moving into downtown affected business?

Free People Relocating to Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek

Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek

The women’s clothing store Free People is relocating within downtown Walnut Creek to Broadway Plaza early next year. They will be located in between The Art of Shaving and Crate and Barrel in front of the future Apple store where currently construction is going on. Enjoying a $2 Ice Cream Cone

In a world of organic, nitrogen-churned, hand-crafted $6 ice cream cones, it’s good to know simple $2 ice cream cones are out there. On a hot summer day in Concord I really enjoyed this $2.19 chocolate fudge cone. No hiding of kid sizes like I’ve seen elsewhere. It may not be fancy-shmancy ice cream with a story, but it sure did taste good on a hot summer day… 🙂

This week we learned about a handcrafted American-made goods shop opening in Broadway Plaza called Makers Market. That has me wondering what people make around here as a side business or hobby. I recently signed up at a makerspace called Techshop in San Francisco and have been busy learning and using laser cutters, 3D printers, wood and metal working machines and even welding. What do you make?
