Purpose: 1. Learn how to identify which plants are needed, and then place plants so that they help each other grow for increased yield, soil health and less work for the gardener.

2. Learn how to build structures such as herb spirals, keyhole beds or mandala beds to incorporate guilds.

Participants will be able to: identify 6 critical functions of trees and how to use them in the garden; what types of trees and plants to use for desired functions; what to plant around trees; how to build high-density planting structures.

San Francisco Creamery Closes over Cockroach Infestation

Thanks to a reader for pointing out this SF Gate article that shows that San Francisco Creamery in Walnut Creek was closed by health inspectors over a cockroach infestation. For ice cream in downtown Walnut Creek check out Lottie’s Creamery or CREAM.

From the article:

Violations found by the health inspector on February 25 — four days after the business reported their last pest control visit — include seven or more live cockroaches (and droppings) on the refrigerator gasket at the cook line, as well as others on top of a soybean oil container next to a food prep sink, near a dishwashing sink and inside a cockroach egg case on a hotel pan.

Dead cockroaches were found on the gasket of the walk-in freezer, near the water heater, on top of a soap dispenser, inside a cabinet were soda machine is stored and next to a freezer that stores ice cream cakes.

JPG@The Bank Art Gallery Pop-Up Opens in Lafayette

A new pop-up art gallery called JPG@The Bank, from the owner of Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery down the block opened recently at the corner of Mt. Diablo Blvd. and Moraga Rd in Lafayette where Wells Fargo used to be. In addition to monthly art exhibits there will also be various workshops and events hosted there. Check out the full schedule here. One of the highlights of the gallery is the bank vault; The door and various contraptions can be viewed along with the safety deposit boxes which are being used as mini art dioramas and are constantly changing and evolving. (They were completely emptied prior to opening). It’s a really eclectic and cool spot so if you’re in the area definitely check it out before it closes in June!

Janie and Jack Closing in Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek

Last month we learned that the children’s clothing Gymboree will be closing in Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek and it looks like the sale of Janie and Jack, also owned by Gymboree, hasn’t gone through so that store will be closing as well unless it gets bought out soon.

The workshop is flimited to 10 writers and is free. Writers must agree to attend all three workshops.
Joyce Carol Oates is an award-winning author of more than 40 books. She has won the National Book Award for Fiction and has been a regular contender for the Nobel Prize. She was the recipient of the Prix Femina, the PEN American Lifetime Achievement Award, the President’s Medal in the Humanities and the 2019 Jerusalem Prize. Ms. Oates is currently Visiting Professor in the UC Berkeley English Department.
To be considered for the workshop, applicants must be Lafayette residents or Lafayette Library patrons. Interested applicants must submit 30 (double-spaced) pages of memoir for consideration no later than Friday, March 8, 2019. Submit writing samples along with applicants full name, mailing address, email and phone number to Beth Needel, via email, bneedel@LLLCF.org.

Flashlight Books Reopens in Downtown Walnut Creek after Remodel
