Guest curated by Heather Marx, Altered States features artists across generations living and working along the California coast who harness natural elements or the environment to create their artwork. The artists work in a wide range of media and share a passion for creating art that is about process and reclamation. This exhibition highlights the natural cycles of our complex environment and offers patrons an opportunity to slow down and reflect on how we are all interconnected by the sun, moon, air, and tides.
Lafayette Mercantile
Thanks to everyone who emailed that the seafood restaurant Yankee Pier will be closing today in the Lafayette Mercantile shopping center. Apparently high rent as well as lower revenue caused the same group that owned Lark Creek in downtown Walnut Creek to exit. However, their website does show they also own nearby Cooperage and Corners Tavern. I wonder if the addition of newer restaurants Batch & Brine and Barranco across the street impacted them negatively?

A few years ago I bought a book by the Japanese author Marie Kondo called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing and attempted to clean up my ever-accumulating stuff. I followed her instructions by taking clothing piece by piece, staring at it, asking myself if it brought joy. If not, I thanked it and got rid of it. Initially I found it awkward but got the hang of it and was able to clean up quite a bit.
Last year I listened to an interesting Katie Couric podcast with Marie Kondo so when I learned that she had a new Netflix show where she visits a new family each episode to help implement her KonMari decluttering method I knew I had to check it out. I found it somewhat entertaining and inspiring but my Japanese wife and daughter thought some of Ms. Kondo’s mannerisms quite annoying. Like when entering a home to squeal, “Haaaaiiiiii”. Or kneeling in silence for a few minutes to greet the dwelling. So much so that I told them to show some respect for other cultures. 😀

Years ago around town I noticed license plate holders with Future Hyundai of Concord and thought it was odd they would advertise a future dealership opening. I even drove by the future dealership wondering how long it would take for them to open. Eventually it dawned on me: the name of the dealership is Future Hyundai of Concord! I feel like such a dum dum! 😳
