Encina Grande, Walnut Creek
Rounding out a brutal week in Walnut Creek restaurant closings, Evie’s Hamburgers closed recently at the Encina Grande shopping center in Walnut Creek. This comes after Cinco de Mayo, Stanford’s, Tender Greens, and Andy Sushi, not to mention the jazz club Impulse Room closing, all with the last week or so. A new restaurant called Taqueria Magico is planning on opening in the former Evie’s spot in the beginning of August.

The fast casual restaurant Tender Greens closed last Friday after eight years in downtown Walnut Creek. According to a sign in the window their lease was up and since this was their “poorest performing restaurant” they decided to not renew their lease. It’s been a couple of years since Lark Creek closed next door, but Bierhaus is planning to open in the fall in that spot. Interestingly, one employee I spoke with said the property is owned by the city and they didn’t budge on lowering the rent and he blamed the city for focusing on the Broadway Plaza area for development over this area.
If you miss Tender Greens you can always check out their Berkeley location which remains open.

Thanks to a reader for sending word that Stanford’s closed today at Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek. It was packed when I checked them out last night to celebrate/mourn the last day in business. According to an employee the construction next door wasn’t helping…
From their website:
We’re sorry to announce Stanfords Walnut Creek is permanently closed.
We are thankful to have hosted so many of your celebrations and to have been a part of this wonderful community.
Anyone know?
From a reader:
We live in the Lyric building facing east towards Mt. Diablo. Right next to Mr. Luckys is a little strip mall about to be demolished and there will be a new building going up and I’m curious what it will be and how tall it will be. Is there a website or someone I can ask about this? We pay a lot of money in rent for the views and we’re about to resign and I just want to know what we’re in for in regards to noise, potential loss of views etc. I also want to know if there is a risk of asbestos in the existing building.
