Thanks to a reader for sending word that L & L Hawaiian Barbecue is coming to downtown Walnut Creek where Home of Chicken and Waffles and later Baygreens Salad used to be. Check out their menu here.
From their website:
In the early years, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue was a successful chain of drive-in restaurants with a reputation for serving fresh plate lunches throughout the Hawaiian islands. In late 1999, our founders – Johnson Kam and Eddie Flores, Jr. – introduced their signature, Asian and American fusion take on the classic plate lunch to the residents of California.
Plate lunch – also known as “the state food of Hawaii” – dates back to wage laborers in 19th century sugar plantations and pineapple fields, who brought rice and other leftovers to work in compartmentalized tins. Lunches were often shared, resulting in a harmonious mix of home recipes from Japan, China, the Philippines, Portugal, Korea, and even New England.
N. Main St. & Cypress St, Walnut Creek
There has been lots of construction going on at N. Main St. near the corner of Cypress St. in downtown Walnut Creek as the sidewalk and a few parking spots get demolished to make room for a new “mini” plaza featuring “synthetic play mounds and a new outdoor parklet”.
From the project web page:
The Cypress Corner Mini Plaza project is a public private partnership between the City of Walnut Creek and Walnut Creek Downtown. The Cypress Corner Mini Plaza will enhance the public sidewalk on the west side of North Main Street at Cypress Street. The intent of the plaza is to create a public gathering space in the heart of the traditional downtown area. The project will reconstruct the existing sidewalk, adding new hardscape, landscaping, arbor, lighting and seating to create a mini plaza space. Synthetic play mounds and a new outdoor parklet will also be created as part of this project.
Spotted this red convertible in downtown Walnut Creek. Anyone know the make and year? I’m going to guess 1970’s. I don’t see any dice though.
