Restaurants

Last week I noted that the indoor dog space Zoom Room will be opening on August 3rd at the Avalon apartment complex in the Contra Costa Centre Transit Village located across from the Pleasant Hill BART station, and now Diablo Dish and the Contra Costa Times is reporting that a new Peruvian restaurant called Mochica will be opening on Treat Blvd. and Sunne Ln. later this year or early next year. See photo above for the ‘Leased’ sign so it looks like that’s the location although it might be elsewhere. As the Contra Costa Times article notes, “most of the storefronts remain vacant in Avalon Walnut Creek, the mixed-use development at the Pleasant Hill-Contra Costa Centre BART station.” When I dropped by last week to see what was going on down there I have to agree with that statement. It felt really desolate. I hope the new restaurant will bring in more interesting stores so I can enjoy strolling around there every now and then.

His Walnut Creek restaurant, however, will be a more casual affair, closer in spirit to Altamirano’s Mochica, which specializes in elevated-but-affordable Peruvian specialties for dine-in as well as take out.

Back in February I noted delays with the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf construction at the Sprouts Shopping Center in Walnut Creek and recently stopped by to get a look at the progress when lo and behold this is what I saw. No. Progress. At. All. I think the stop sign inside is a perfect metaphor for this. It looks identical to what it looked like back in February, yet there is no For Lease sign either. Anyone know what’s going on? I was looking forward to trying out the tea at this cafe!

1690 Locust St, Walnut Creek

In May I noted that C U Sushi was closing in Walnut Creek and according to a sign in the window they closed last month. Their Berkeley location at 2152 Center St. is still open. In its place a new sushi restaurant called Hiro Sushi will be coming soon to this location.

Yesterday I noted that Oyama Sushi was opening soon on N. Main St. a few blocks away so there will be plenty of sushi options in downtown Walnut Creek.

Way back in February I noted that Lafayette-based Oyama Sushi was opening a new sushi joint in Walnut Creek and now the ‘Coming Soon’ signage is up so it’s official. According to an employee I spoke with they plan to open in August. Check out the Lafayette menu here.

1528 Locust St, Walnut Creek

Earlier this month I noted that Vitality Bowls would be opening this weekend in downtown Walnut Creek and they are now open. Check out their menu here. Like I did at their Pleasanton location, I ordered another Vitality Bowl and it was delicious as always, perfect for a hot summer day. Everything tasted very fresh and ripe. I added bee pollen which was a first! The inside is decorated with rustic tables and posters on the walls let you know about the various health benefits of Acai berries. As you can see from the photo below there is a giant TV and lounge chairs in the front of the store to relax in. FYI, there are no bathrooms at this location.
