Friday, March 31st – Saturday, April 29th, 2017Three sisters discover secrets, lost opportunities, and new beginnings in this charming story of a bittersweet homecoming.
Stockton, California. 1945. The war is over and American optimism is returning. Also returning are the three Matsumoto sisters – Rose, Grace and Chiz – to their family home, a farm outside of Stockton, to begin their lives again after internment in Arkansas. Successful, prosperous and part of the community before the war, taking up life where they left off proves more complicated than they thought. Balancing comedy, romance and suspense, this tender and truly heartwarming play tells an important story of what it means to be American.

$12Iranian film “The Salesman,” by Asghar Farhadi is this month’s selection by Mountain Shadow Film Society. It won the 2017 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Farhadi, who won a previous Academy Award in 2012, is known as “Master of the Ordinary” because he presents one of the few glances at middle class life that is available in Iran.
“The Salesman” refers to the Arthur Miller play and the two leading actors are a married couple facing their own dilemmas. A.O. Scott of The New York Times says “The Salesman” is a story “about trust and honor, about violence against women in a patriarchal society, about the woe that is in marriage but it is also about death, a salesman and the hidden brutality of class.”

Last month we learned that the clothing store Ministry of Supply would be opening where Vince Camuto used to be in Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek and they have now opened. Although predominantly a men’s clothing store they also have a small women’s section as well. Check out their website here. They are having a launch party on March 15th with, “beer, wine, cocktails and made-on-the-spot ice cream from Smitten Ice Cream” as well as a “chance to win free Ministry of Supply products”. If interested, register for the party here.
