Almost two years have passed since Barnes & Noble closed in downtown Walnut Creek and finally a new bookstore has returned with Amazon Books having opened yesterday at Broadway Plaza. (Swan’s Fine Books which sells rare and vintage books is also downtown). With their highly detailed online shopping data Amazon is able to feature in-demand books throughout the store, face-out to make it easy to browse. There is a kid’s section in back as well as Amazon electronics such as Kindles, Echos etc. on display throughout the store. Unlike Barnes & Noble that offered sales on best sellers and other books at Amazon Books, amazon.com pricing is only available for Prime members. Otherwise it’s list prices for everything. (Ironically, if you’re not a Prime member, you could browse Amazon Books in-person and then order via bn.com to get better pricing)! To find out Prime pricing there are scanners throughout the store where you can scan books (see photo after the jump). Magazines are list prices even for Prime members. Unlike Capital One Cafe down the block that offers 50% off Peet’s drinks when using a Capital One credit card, there are no cafe discounts for Prime members. Also, I saw only four chairs available along the front window so seating is extremely limited. With wide aisles and nicely curated books facing cover out, Amazon Books is a great place to browse and shop for books particularly for Prime members.

In August we learned some scuttlebutt about Minnesota-based Life Time Fitness opening a huge new gym in the empty plot across from Macy’s in Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek and according to a recently posted Design Review agenda it looks like this is going to happen! Plans are for a massive ~75,000 sf, 50 foot building. There is no mention of Life Time Fitness in the agenda but we now know a HUGE gym is planned for this spot.

The brick facade is now up at the soon-to-be-opening Amazon Books shop in Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek. They are still looking for seasonal associates here, which will also feature a cafe. I can’t wait to check this place out, although considering their recent purchase of Whole Foods, I do wonder about the increasing power they have in the marketplace and how it will affect long-term prices.

In May we learned that the Canadian skincare company Saje Natural Wellness would be coming to Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek and they have now opened where Michael Stars used to be. Find out more about the Saje story here and check out their best sellers here.
Another skincare company, Kiehl’s, opened a couple of years ago down the block, also in Broadway Plaza. How do they compare?

Thanks to a reader for pointing out this Napa Valley Register article stating that the Napa-based fast casual restaurant Heritage Eats is coming to Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek. Check out their menu here and find about the Heritage Eats story here. This looks to be opening next to Boudin Bakery. Stay tuned…
Considering how crowded True Food Kitchen is all the time I’m not surprised another restaurant is opening here.
From their website:
Heritage Eats is a globally inspired, fast-fine restaurant concept serving sandwiches, salads, wraps, rice bowls, tacos & more with a focus on elevated ‘daily life’ food from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and beyond.

From an email:
I feel like a total weenie complaining about this, but tonight in downtown walnut creek my best friend and I were almost followed to our car by some creep that had been lingering around us near the little seating area near True Food Kitchen.
I noticed him skate toward us coming from the Broadway Plaza, and he saw us and was lingering near the SoulCycle doors, then came and sat next to us and oddly pulled his chair closer to us, then [my friend] said we should go, not even realizing he was creeping but just that he was staring at her – as soon as we got up, he got up too and followed us near the entrance and I slowed down before we got too far into the garage and quietly said “Is he following us” and [my friend] said yes, so we stopped walking and he immediately stopped too and realized that we noticed what he was trying to do, so he pretended like he was going to use the vending machine. Then we walked back to the seating area and some nice SoulCycle girls helped us get security to escort us to our car and by that time he had disappeared.
