Spotted this great wall mural at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School in Moraga. Anyone know who “Molly Pitcher”, “Athena Nike”, and “Elizabeth” are?

I’ve been watching the progress of the clock tower in downtown Pleasant Hill on Crescent Drive and it’s now completed. It looks way better than the original clock tower.

Thanks to a reader for sending word that McCovey’s Restaurant will be closing their downtown Walnut Creek location in early February and relocating to San Francisco to be near AT&T Park. According to a McCovey’s employee they will they close after the Super Bowl and also mentioned that the SoCal based burger restaurant Slater’s 50/50 will be opening at this location. Check out Slater’s 50/50 lunch and dinner menu here.
From the Slater’s 50/50 website:
Slater’s 50/50® was founded in 2009 in Anaheim Hills, California by Scott Slater, a SoCal native with a passion for bacon, burgers and craft beer and a disdain for the boring. Inspired by the belief that bacon is meat candy, Scott created the original 50/50 patty– made of 50% ground bacon and 50% ground beef – and a menu full of amplified burgers and indulgent dishes to pair with one of the most mind-blowing selections of local and regional craft beer available on tap anywhere. As word spread and lines of hungry guests grew, so did Scott’s passion to push the culinary envelope in an environment that was relaxed, fun and most importantly, designed to be customizable for his guests’ preferences.

Earlier this month we learned that Second to None Consignment shop would be closing early next year in downtown Walnut Creek and someone left a comment on Facebook that Cornucopia Consignments was closing as well in Pleasant Hill.
From their Facebook page:
Cornucopia Consignments will be closed by the end of December.
Beginning in 2015, our building that houses the store will be used instead to provide Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area‘s growing services for cancer patients and their families. When Cornucopia opened, CSC served about 500 people per year. This year, CSC will serve close to 2,000.
We regret that we will need to close Cornucopia, but our stakeholders understand that our highest priority is for CSC to deliver its mission. We want to express our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who helped to make Cornucopia “the little house of treasures” — and those who made a lasting difference for so many people facing cancer. And perhaps most importantly, we would like to extend a huge thank you to the volunteers who made Cornucopia such a great place for so many years; and of course the wonderful customers and consignors. Thank you!
Until then, come by for some great sales!
Saturday Morning Speaker Series: Golden Gate Road Races: 1952-1954:
Blackhawk Automotive Museum
3700 Blackhawk Plaza Circle, Danville
Saturday, December 13th, 2014
10:30am | Free with admissionBetween 1952 and 1954, during a time before racing settled into purpose built tracks, there were a series of races that ran through San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Fast cars, tight turns, and spectators lining the road—an era of racing that has gone forever.
The idea was simple: “Put a bunch of high-powered sports cars in the middle of Golden Gate Park, and have an all-out road race, with 100,000 spectators standing inches from the speeding Ferraris and Jaguars.” (Michael Taylor, SFGate)
An ardent automobile enthusiast and historian, Robert Devlin is a very active member of the Ferrari Club of America, having held several national positions with that organization and serving regularly as a judge at both regional and national events. Robert will be giving a presentation on the Golden Gate Road Races and will be on hand for a question and answer session immediately following.
There will be a question and answer session following the presentation. The speaker series is Free with admission to the restaurant and is Free to Museum Member.
