From an email:
The first independent skate shop to open in Walnut Creek in 20 years, Up The Creek is not your typical skate shop. They are hoping to welcome everyone to the sport, especially beginner skaters, girl skaters, LGBTQ skaters as well as creaky-kneed old skaters. Of course, with decks from Meow, Welcome, Foundation and Powell, trucks by Independent, and Theeve and wheels by Bones, Pig and Orbs, they will have all the gear needed for experienced shredders too. Sign up for their newsletter to hear about upcoming beginner skate clinics and plans to team up with Unity Skateboarding in Oakland to bring some Queer Skate sessions to this side of the tunnel. With Walnut Creek-based professional skateboarder Corey Duffel behind the counter on Thursdays, you know you are going to get good service! Stop in at Up The Creek Records, hear some great music, and check out the new Skate section.

Lesher Center for the Arts
1601 Civic Dr, Walnut Creek
Saturday, August 24th, 2019The Messenger Legacy is an elite line-up of six alumni of one of jazz’ most influential bands — Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. The performance commemorates the centennial of Blakey’s birth and honors the legacy of the man whose bands became one of the most important institutions of apprenticeship in American music history. Among those Blakey nurtured in their early careers are Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver, Chick Corea, and Wynton Marsalis. Drummer Ralph Peterson leads the legacy band. He was selected by Blakey to play alongside him in 1983 in the Messenger’s two-drummer big band. The band is intergenerational featuring alto saxophonist Bobby Watson, tenor saxophonist Bill Pierce, who were mainstays in the late 70s and 80s, bassist Essiet Essiet from Nigeria, trumpeter Brian Lynch, and pianist Geoffrey Keezer.

In response to the popularity of our 2015 exhibition BLOW UP, Bedford Gallery is excited to present a second exhibition of inflatable art. BLOW UP II explores the imaginative ways that artists use air as a tool for creating large-scale sculpture and includes imagery that is figurative and abstract. Accessible, yet rich with meaning, these pieces use perception of space to open a dialogue about pop culture and social norms.
