Yesterday we learned that all Navlet’s Garden Centers will become Sloat Garden Centers, and so I’m wondering what people’s favorite nurseries are. I like checking out Orchard Nursery in Lafayette and one time bought an amazing Agave plant at The Ruth Bancroft Garden plant sale. What is your favorite nursery or garden center?

Thanks to a reader for sending word that the Danville Navlet’s Garden Center has closed. All Navlet’s garden centers will be become Sloat Garden Centers and reopen on February 19th. Check out the Sloat Garden Center website here.

What are the chances that not one but two Asian boba tea cafes are coming to downtown Walnut Creek?! Earlier this week we learned that Piedmont-based Mr. Green Bubble would be opening on Locust St. in downtown Walnut Creek and now another Asian boba tea shop, Chalogy, is coming to downtown Walnut Creek, also on Locust St, where House of Beads used to be. They plan to open by May.
Not only will Chalogy (from the owners of Drgaon’s Pond next door) offer hand crafted Asian tea, boba tea, and snow ice desserts but they will also be hosting the return of the flavored popcorn shop Cornology to downtown Walnut Creek. (You may remember Cornology in Broadway Plaza which closed 2 years ago). Check out their boba tea offerings here, snow ice menu here and snacks menu here. Thanks to a reader for sending word that ownership has changed at the classic steakhouse and bar The Brass Door in San Ramon. According to a hostess there are no plans for changes at the current time but this may change in the future.

In 1946 Howard “Shorty” Schlesinger opened the 8/5 club ( his favorite odds at the track) in San Ramon California , population 100. It was a small 6 stool bar and dining facility for 20 guests. He featured steamed beer and fried chicken, and a row of nickel slot machines. He served primarily the local ranchers, cattlemen, and travelers along “Highway 21” on their way to San Jose and beyond.
In 1955 his son Mick and local dairy man Dick Basso took over from Shorty and renamed the restaurant “The Brass Door.” They and the restaurant grew along with the San Ramon Valley. Today after several remodels and one fire, The Brass Door will now accommodate over 200 guests. We feature an eclectic menu serving corn fed Midwestern beef, chicken, fresh seafood, prime ribs, french dips, sensational salads, sandwiches and soups.
Prime rib is our signature dish and is served “all day everyday”. Our prime rib French dip sandwich has always been a guest favorite.
We have an extensive wine list featuring Livermore Valley Napa Valley, and California wines, along with full cocktail lounge.
