Homegrown Sustainable Sandwiches Coming to Lafayette Mercantile

The La Boulange Cafes closed in Walnut Creek and Lafayette last September and we learned a while back that Lemonade will be opening this fall in the Walnut Creek location. We now know that Homegrown Sustainable Sandwiches will be taking over the Lafayette location on Mt. Diablo Blvd. Check out their Seattle menu here.

Our idea is that if we thoughtfully curate every little thing about the sandwich – where the grains for the bread come from, how the animals behind our meats and cheeses are raised, what chemicals we’re keeping off our fruits and vegetables – each sandwich will be a little bit healthier for the planet and for the people who enjoy eating them. And when you multiply that effect by all the sustainable sandwiches we sell every day, you can really start to envision the positive change we can have on the food system, even by rallying behind something as simple as a sandwich.

Friday Question of the Day – Do you Play Pokémon Go?

I’ve been reading a lot about the app Pokemon Go becoming super popular around the country as people use their mobile phones to try to capture virtual creatures based on their current location. I have to admit, to encourage my kids to get out more I installed it to see what it was all about and we went for a walk which was quite entertaining. A recent visit to the Moraga Commons park was teaming with kids staring at their phones no doubt playing Pokemon Go as well. Quite remarkable. Do you play Pokemon Go? If so, what do you like about it?

The second movie in the Sustainable Lafayette Summer Film Series “Rebels with a Cause” will be shown on Tuesday, July 26 at 6:30pm at the Lafayette Library’s Community Hall. The film is the story of a regional California effort that grew into an astonishing system of 14 National Seashores – the result of garden clubs, ranchers, farmers, conservationists, politicians from both parties, widows, and volunteers working together through compromise and negotiation, with the American public coming up as the winner. A $10 donation is requested, $5 for students, and cookies, snacks, coffee and beverages will be served.

Pizza My Heart Signage Up in Downtown Walnut Creek

Burger Lounge Coming to The Orchards at Walnut Creek

The Orchards at Walnut Creek

First comes the pizza, then you know burgers can’t be far behind. In May we learned that Mod Pizza would be coming to the new Orchards at Walnut Creek shopping center anchored by a new Safeway which closed at the Encina Grande shopping center across the street last year, and we now have learned that Southern California-based Burger Lounge will be opening possibly their first Northern California location here based on their current locations. Note that the above photo will not be the actual building where they’ll be located but since no signage has been posted yet I posted the latest look of the general area where the shopping center will be.

SoulCycle Opening in August in Broadway Plaza

The cycling studio SoulCycle will be opening their first East Bay location when they open next month in Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek near the Macy’s parking garage. This means that downtown Walnut Creek will go from having no cycling studios a few years ago to three. In 2014, Cycle Scape opened on Mt. Diablo Blvd, and FlyWheel opened last year on N.
