Yesterday we learned about the rise of pickpockets in downtown Walnut Creek as more and more people dine and shop in downtown Walnut Creek now that the newly remodeled Broadway Plaza has reopened. That got me wondering, have you ever been pickpocketed? If so, what city did it happen in and did you report it to police? When I walk around in shorts or slacks it seems like it would be quite easy for someone to slip their hand in to grab my wallet. It hasn’t happened to me so far so maybe I’m lucky or it’s not that much of a common occurrence.

Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek
Hold on to your wallets and purses as picketpocketing is on the rise in downtown Walnut Creek. This comes on the heel of the new Broadway Plaza redevelopment which is bringing more people to the downtown area and according to NBC Bay Area, “police are warning the public to be on the lookout for pick-pockets”.
As a former New Yorker I try to be as careful as possible with my wallet when it comes to crowded areas downtown or elsewhere. I haven’t been pickpocketed yet but be careful while over there.
From the Walnut Creek police:
On 7/20/16 at 1444 hours, an elderly female was a victim of a purse snatch robbery attempt. The victim was walking eastbound on Cypress St near Commercial Lane when Suspects #1 and #2 grabbed her purse and attempted to steal it. The victim held on tightly to her purse and was forced to the ground. The suspects then dragged the victim along the sidewalk causing minor injuries. As several citizens rushed to her aid, the suspects let go of the victim’s purse and fled to a nearby vehicle occupied by Suspects #3 and #4. The suspect vehicle was last seen westbound on Mt. Diablo Blvd.
On 7/22/16 at 1242 hours, a suspect matching the description of Suspect #1 entered the patio area of a restaurant on the 1500 block of Mt. Diablo Blvd and stole two purses which were on the ground near where the victims were seated. The suspect then ran to the above suspect vehicle which was parked across the street. The suspect vehicle then jumped the median on Mt. Diablo Blvd and drove westbound in the eastbound lanes before continuing westbound on Mt. Diablo Blvd at the Locust St. intersection.
WCPD believes these two crimes are related and requests anyone who may have witnessed any part of the above incidents to contact Detective Bill Jeha 925-943-3518.
I stopped by the Soda Aquatic Center at Campolindo High School in Moraga recently and saw these gigantic solar panels going up in the parking lot. It turns out all four high schools, Las Lomas, Acalanes, Miramonte and Campolindo are getting solar panels installed this summer. Read more about it in this Lamorinda Weekly article here.

We are pleased to share with the community that the Acalanes Union High School District will be initiating large solar projects at each of our comprehensive high schools this summer. The installation design for the solar panels will be carports in the main parking lot at each of the schools. The projects will allow us to substantially reduce our carbon footprint (the equivalent of pulling about 350 cars off the road), realize significant savings in general fund operating costs, contribute substantial energy to the “grid” during peak times (afternoon and summer), and model the use of renewable energy to our students.
The AUHSD Governing Board approved a contract to enter into a power purchase agreement with SolarCity in June 2015. There will be zero upfront capital investment as SolarCity will finance, design, construct and operate the photovoltaic solar panels and battery products on each of the District’s comprehensive high schools. Only a few parking spaces (a precious resource) will be lost with the introduction of the carports.
Capitalizing on the latest technologies and current incentives, the District estimates it will save $110,900 in year one, and the net present value of the 20-year contract is estimated to be $2.3 million using a conservative 2% utility inflation rate. Higher electricity inflation rates will result in greater savings for the District.
Sleepy Hollow Lane, Orinda

1552 Locust St, Walnut Creek
It’s been over a year since the Japanese restaurant Izakaya Jun opened in downtown Walnut Creek but according to a sign in the window they have now closed but a, “new restaurant will be opened one month later”. Does this mean the same owners will open a new but different restaurant? Stay tuned…
