The DIY wood sign workshop company Board & Brush is coming to downtown Walnut Creek where Rainbow’s End Thrift Store used to be through the passageway next to the Mediterranean restaurant Pomegranate. According to their calendar the first workshop (Family Inspired) will be held on October 25th. Check out the details here and watch for updates on their Facebook page here. Considering how prevalent paint & sip studios are around here it’s cool to see a twist using wood. Not sure if they will allow alcohol here. Stay tuned…
From their website:
At Board & Brush Creative Studio, our goal is to turn you into a “DIY master” by encouraging you to understand and appreciate the beauty of raw materials—the wood, the knots, the color variations and the simple imperfections that will make your project unique. Distressing, sanding with the grain, and staining are a few of the important steps we will guide you through to make your personalized wood sign look as though it has been with you for years—like a vintage heirloom.
Our mission: Hone your own passion for décor & DIY projects; we hand you the tools & direction, you create the friendships and craft.
EXPERIENCE NOT NEEDED! BRING YOUR CREATIVITY & PERSONALITY, WE’LL BRING THE WOOD, WINE & PAINT!
Never used a hammer, sand paper, or a power tool? Never added picture hangers to a home décor sign to hang on your wall? Never waxed wood to protect it from the elements and make it glisten in the light? Don’t worry! We will teach you all of these skills. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if we find you in the hardware store filling up your own toolbox after your DIY workshop session is over!We work with top graphic designers from all over the country to provide you with the most up-to-date, inspiring designs that will adorn your walls for years to come. In addition, our custom stencil process allows you to personalize your piece with your surname, monogram, the year of your special event or the names of your beloved children … the possibilities are endless and design choices are expansive.

Plaza Escuela, Walnut Creek
It’s still only August but Spirit Halloween has opened for the second year in a row in Plaza Escuela in downtown Walnut Creek. Click here for a 20% off single item coupon and get a head start on costume shopping. It’s fun to check out the displays and even though I was ready for it I got a shock surprise from some scary-looking puppet popping out at me.

Broadway Pointe, Walnut Creek
Earlier this month we learned that the online thrift store ThredUp would be opening their second retail location (10 month popup) in the Broadway Pointe shopping center in downtown Walnut Creek where H&M used to be and they are now open. I stopped by with my teenage daughter and was impressed with both the selection and quality of clothes. Before you go clothing shopping drop by to see what they offer. You could save quite a bit AND help the environment at the same time!

The clothing store Atlas & Athena, which reopened in downtown Walnut Creek after previously having shops elsewhere downtown and Pleasant Hill, is closing by the end of the month. Judging by the store closings in Broadway Plaza (and across the nation), such as Michael Stars, Kit and Ace, ivivva and Vince Camuto, this doesn’t come as a huge surprise with the changing retail landscape. As you can see in the sign below, all clothing is 40% off with home goods 30% off. Fixtures etc are for sale as well.

Lafayette Shopping Center
Whippersnappers – A Unique Boutique featuring gifts and doll clothes, houses, furniture and miniatures is closing with 20% off according to a sign outside the storefront.

Thanks to a reader for sending word about a new shop coming to Lafayette right next to the abandoned Park Theatre called r and t Bricks, The Lego Store. This is one of the tiniest spaces I’ve ever seen but appropriately enough I did see minifigures for sale. Stay tuned…
