1348 Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek
Thanks to all who sent word… La Boulange Cafe in Walnut Creek has been closed less than a month but coming soon is Los Angeles-based Lemonade, serving “seasonal California comfort food”. More information in this Business Times article. Check out their “early fall 2015” southern California menu here.
From their Facebook page:
The concept is best described as Seasonal California Comfort Food in a fast-casual cafeteria setting. A comfortable place where locals and visitors enjoy a rotating daily spread of deliciousness: from ruggedly roasted Brussels sprouts to grain salads from around the world to stewed short ribs falling off the bone. Our dishes stress simple preparations with global taste, and are a perfect fit for today’s on-the-go lifestyle and perceptive palate.
Lemonade caters to people looking for a quick lunch or a healthy “grab and go” dinner for the family. The cafés have an emphasis on convenience and affordability, while serving the same fresh, high-quality, and innovative modern cuisine that the brand has become known for.
The food at Lemonade is as creative and diverse as the city’s inhabitants. Our marketplace salads, unique sandwiches, and slow-simmered stews taste as though every culture stirred a bit into the pot. For example, the skirt steak with grilled onions and piquillo peppers with its smoky depth, ping-pongs perfectly with our snappy salad of Chinese long beans, pluot plums, and scallion vinaigrette.
Rossmoor Town Center, Walnut Creek
Thanks to a reader for sending word that Starbucks is coming to Rossmoor Town Center where Safeway is located at the corner of Tice Valley Blvd. and Rossmoor Pkwy. in Walnut Creek. I checked with the developer who confirms Starbucks has signed a lease. Stay tuned…
965 Mountain View Dr, Lafayette
Last month we learned that Bistro Burger & Grill would be opening in Lafayette where Susan Foord Cafe used to be near Trader Joe’s and they will be opening later this week, possibly on Thursday or Friday. Take a look at a preview of the inside below. There is also a long bar area which will offer four different types of draft beer, wine, and light cocktails as well as smoothies and milkshakes. Check out their food menu here and drinks menu here. I look forward to trying a Paris Burger (mushrooms, caramelized onions, Brie cheese)!
Danville Hotel, Danville
Sonoma-based Basque Boulangerie Cafe is “coming soon” to the historic Danville Hotel on Hartz Ave. Find out more from Diablo Dish here. Check out the Sonoma cafe menu here and muffin and cookie menu here.
From the Basque Boulangerie Cafe website:
Basque Boulangerie Café opened on the historic square of Sonoma in 1994 with an old-world feeling of an original French bakery. It is a second generation bakery, originally started in Sonoma in 1956 as the Sonoma French Bakery in the Sebastiani Theatre building. Our founders’ family arrived in the United States from the southwest region of France, specifically the Pyrenees Mountains that separate France from Spain. They settled in the heart of the Valley of the Moon because of opportunity and since it reminded them of the villages in the Basque and Bearn regions of France that they were from. They had a family history of bakers, butchers and restauranteurs. The family learned the baking trade in their French small towns of Saint Etienne de Baigorry, and Oloron Sainte Marie and offers two generations of baking excellence. Our team of talented bakers start late at night, every night, using the old world European tradition of hand crafted baking artisanship in order to create these crusty, hand made loaves of peasant bread, inspired by our founders’ Basque ancestors. We have brought traditional stone hearth ovens to Sonoma to assure the same consistent, traditional bread with no preservatives. Our pastries, baked goods and desserts are hand crafted in small batches using European-style techniques with quality ingredients.
65 Moraga Way, Orinda
There has been much anticipation about the Italian restaurant from the owner of Piazza Pellegrini in the North Beach section of San Francisco and Taverna Pelligrini is now open in Orinda on Moraga Way. Check out their menu here. This place has plenty of space as well as a seating area across from the bar to catch the game on one of their flat screen TVs. I can’t wait to try a margherita pizza made on their wood burning oven. Check out the bar, wood burning oven and more inside photos after the jump.
Plenty more photos of the inside after the jump…

Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek
California Pizza Kitchen will be closing their Broadway Plaza location in downtown Walnut Creek, possibly with a few months. One source indicates they will eventually be relocating to the nearby Agorra (previously known as The Village) condo complex at Newell Ave. and S. Main St. Stay tuned…
1359 Locust Street, Walnut Creek
At the beginning of the year we learned that Fuego Tequila Grill would be opening where Taqueria Mexican Grill used to be in downtown Walnut Creek on Locust St. and they have now opened. Check out their extensive Latin drinks menu here. The food menu was still being tweaked when I dropped by but will feature Mexican food such as Arrachera steak. As you can see in the photo below, a giant projector screen in the middle of the bar will feature sports games lit with led lighting in the colors of the teams playing. If you want to see what a Miami-style bar is all about you’ll want to check this place out.
More photos of the inside after the jump…
Walnut Creek
In June we learned that Starbucks would be shuttering all La Boulange cafes in September and sure enough, as you can see in the photos, both the Lafayette and Walnut Creek locations are gone. What cafe would you like to see open up here?
