Each family friendly presentation includes meeting live animal ambassadors, learning about their special adaptations, and talking with their keepers.
Lindsay Wildlife Museum is the first-ever Bay Area Science Festival partner in Contra Costa County.
This collaborative public education initiative brings together leading academic, scientific, corporate, and non-profit institutions to showcase the region as an international leader in innovation. Based on similar festivals throughout the world, the 50+ festival events are expected to attract over 50,000 active participants, many of whom traditionally do not have access to quality scientific resources.
- While You Were Sleeping – Meet live nocturnal animals and learn why they stay up all night and how they find their way in the dark.
- Creepy Crawlies – Get up close to spiders, cockroaches and snakes and learn how these ‘creepy’ animals help the environment.
- Animal Myths – Are bats blind? Can a toad give you warts? Are all snakes poisonous?

Last week I noted that Cafecitos Cafe would be opening on Thursday and so I dropped by to try check them out and try some South American cuisine which I don’t believe is available anywhere else downtown. The inside is nicely decorated with cool posters from the 1915 San Francisco’s World’s Fair and a giant print designed especially for the cafe in keeping with their purpose, “about celebrating life moments through good food, music, and friendships”.
Check out their menu here. There are so many things I wanted to to try but I settled on the Lomo Saltado sandwich, “a popular Peruvian dish with Asian influences served on a fresh bread roll. Marinated beef, tomato, red onion, and cilantro served with papas fritas and Rocoto chili ketchup”.

8:00pm | $3What: Families can ‘ride’ the Diablo Valley Lines during their whistle stop show, featuring hundreds of model trains representing the mid 20th century through today, traveling over 4,300 feet of track on one of the world’s most mountainous model railroad layouts. Dispatched by two Walnut Creek Model Railroad Society members, the show includes a dramatic sunset and night scenes with a rainy thunderstorm, a street railway with trolley cars, big freight yards and a large passenger terminal. The elaborate 34×56 foot layout includes a composite of the mountainous area of the Western United States, bridges, tunnels, terrain from desert to snow covered mountains, towns, train yards, electric street cars, wind turbine, ski lift gondola and more. More than 200 train cars and 50 steam and diesel engines are in operation during the show.

A new wine tasting store called Buon Vino will be opening in downtown Walnut Creek on Locust St. Back in June a cafe was planning to open up but now the Public Notice to Sell Alcoholic Beverages sign is up so this looks more promising.

The event is free and aimed at adults in their 20′s through 40′s. Participants are asked to come ready to tell a 5 minute version of their favorite horror story– could be a book or a movie that gives you the willies or a tale of your worst date ever. Each participant will be given a number as their identification upon sign-in on the evening of the event. Each date will last approximately 5 minutes before participants rotate onto the next person.Participants are asked not to give out their name or contact information during the course of the evening. Matches will be contacted within 5 days after the event. Light refreshments will be served. Due to space limitations, pre-registration is required.

Back in March I noted that Inge’s Footwear would be contracting in downtown Walnut Creek on Locust St. and the new wall is up with separate retail space now available. Will a salon be opening up here or something else?

The pumpkin patch at Shadelands Ranch in Walnut Creek is now open next to the Shadelands Ranch museum on Ygnacio Valley Rd, across and over slightly from the Encina Grande shopping center where Safeway is located. There is quite a lot packed in this small pumpkin patch including a petting zoo, a hay bale playground, painting section and more.
