Macy’s in downtown Walnut Creek in Broadway Plaza has been covered in black fabric for a while now and details on how it will look when it’s finished are being reviewed by the Walnut Creek Design Review commission. As you can see in the above rendering the red look is out, replaced with a lighter motif centered with a large glass opening. Natural light is great so I’m glad this is happening. There will also be a 57,000 square foot addition which you can see in the photo at bottom.

6:30pm | FreeOn Monday, October 6 at 6:30 p.m., award-winning poet Travis Mossotti will stop at the Walnut Creek Library on his Bay Area poetry tour, reading from his latest collection, “Field Study.” This collection, funded in part by the Sustainable Arts Foundation in San Francisco, is steeped in Central Coast history and focuses on conservation efforts for mountain lions and current redwood logging activity going on in the area. Join us for a unique evening of ecology and poetry!
Travis Mossotti was awarded the 2011 May Swenson Poetry Award by contest judge Garrison Keillor for his first collection of poems, About the Dead (USU Press, 2011), and his chapbook My Life as an Island was published by Moon City Press in 2013. His second full-length collection Field Study won the 2013 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Prize and was published in 2014 with Bona Fide Books. Mossotti is currently the Poet-in-Residence at the Endangered Wolf Center, and his poetry has been published in recent issues of the Antioch Review, Southern Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, and elsewhere.

In July we learned about a new garden growing various fruits and vegetables in a sliver of space next to the parking lot at Civic Dr. and Locust St. in downtown Walnut Creek and as you can see in these photos the melons, orange peppers and eggplants are growing nicely. How cool is that!? I wonder if this is related to the restaurant Lettuce (visible behind the orange peppers in the photo below)?

A couple of weeks ago we learned that the indoor cycling gym Cycle Scape Fitness would be opening in downtown Walnut Creek this week but according to a comment made by the owner the opening will be delayed until October:
We are very sorry to announce we will [be] delaying our opening into October…we decided to add an additional shower and will need to be approved by the City.

From the Walnut Creek PD:
On 9/23/14, at approximately 11:55 am, the Walnut Creek Police Department received a 911 call reporting a robbery. The female victim was confronted in her front yard (400 block of Muller Road) by a male suspect armed with a gun. The suspect forced the victim to drive to a Bank of America branch in downtown Walnut Creek where she withdrew money. The suspect and the victim drove back to the victim’s neighborhood where she was released unharmed.
The Walnut Creek Police Department is asking anyone that may have witnessed this incident to call (925) 256-3518. Investigators are also seeking video footage from exterior home security cameras in the area of Lakewood Road around the time of this incident.

Last week we learned about a new wine bar opening in downtown Walnut Creek from the owners of The Hidden Vine Wine Bar in San Francisco and we now have a name: ADEGA | a wine bar. They are planning on opening by year end; this will be their second wine bar after The Hidden Vine Wine Bar that opened about three years ago on Merchant St. The Hidden Vine Wine Bar was included in Gayot Magazine’s 2014 list of the Ten Best Wine Bars in the US so this looks like it’s going to be a great addition to downtown Walnut Creek. Check out their food menu here.

The Gershwin Brothers and the Broadway Musical:
Walnut Creek Library
1644 N. Broadway Ave, Walnut Creek
Thursday September 25th, 2014
6:30pm – 7:30pm | FreeAfter seeing the Gershwin musical, “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” on Broadway last fall, Tim Holt was inspired to explore the lives and music of the Gershwin brothers, George and Ira.
Holt will perform and play songs from the musical, including “S’Wonderful” and “Do Do Do,” as well as selections from “Porgy & Bess,” and other works by the Gershwin team. He’ll discuss their contribution to American popular music and give a behind-the-scenes look at how they crafted their music and words seamlessly together.
Tim will also discuss the work of other great composers from that era, including Yip Harburg (“Somewhere Over The Rainbow”), and Jerome Kern (“‘Ol Man River”).
As in his other programs, Tim will encourage audience members to celebrate our musical heritage by singing right along with him.
