Last November I noted that Starbucks may be coming to the Mercer and they opened today in the Mercer apartment complex in downtown Walnut Creek. Peeking inside I could see a long table (at the lower left in the photo below) and small circular tables further inside at left as well. I expected a coffee shop to open in the Mercer years ago so it’s good to finally see something open up over there. (Thanks to a reader comment about today’s opening.)

Thanks to a reader for sending word that a new restaurant will be opening where The French Bakery is currently located on Lafayette Circle. The French Bakery’s last day will be March 2nd. I made a Judging Cafes post about The French Bakery a couple of years ago.

Spotted in the backside of Broadway Plaza slated to close for redevelopment for the next couple of years, I think this topiary is quite apt. Anyone know what animal this was?

Thanks to a reader for sending word that the kids and maternity consignment store They Grow So Fast on Mt. Diablo Blvd. in Lafayette will be closing for good tomorrow. According to a letter posted in the store their rent was raised by 50% which caused them to leave after 21 years in business.

A new contemporary art gallery called the Jennifer Perlmutter Gallery has opened on Mt. Diablo Blvd. in downtown Lafayette across from Diablo Foods. In addition to featuring the work of Jennifer Perlmutter and others, workshops and events will also take place which looks really interesting. Check out all the events here. Back in January I noted the Banana Republic remodel had begun in Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek and now there is a massive sign outside announcing that it will be opening next month in March.
