Book Group Festival featuring Novelist J. Ryan Stradal:
Rakestraw Books
3 Railroad Ave, Danville
Tuesday, June 7th, 2016
7:00pm – 10:00pm | $15This year’s Book Group Festival — a celebration of books, book groups, and writing — is inspired by the powerful belief that sharing stories with each other is incredibly important. As we become more and more disconnected from each other — our busy lives, the digital illusion — coming together to discuss a great book, and our lives and values, is more important than ever. Every great book group needs great books to discuss and that’s where we come in! During the course of this evening, our team of book nerds will present a terrific array — some new and some not-so-new — of books worth reading and worth discussing. We promise your group will go away fired up to read beyond the bestseller list, and way, way beyond your sister’s hairdresser’s friend’s self-published novel!
1500 Mt. Diablo Blvd, Walnut Creek
Great news as San Francisco-based pizzeria Slice House has opened in downtown Walnut Creek and is the final spot to open in the development at the corner of Mt Diablo Blvd. and Main St. Check out their Walnut Creek menu here. Seating is fairly limited but the good news is that a new patio will be opening soon in part of the parking lot next door.
As a discerning pizza fanatic from NY, I take my pizza seriously and this is definitely the real deal. I pay particular attention to the crust and the Slice House crust was superb. I’ve also noticed pizza around here tends to be lacking in tomato sauce and as you can see in the photo of the pizza after the jump, these slices have the perfect combination of cheese to tomato sauce. It hit all the right notes and I’m glad there is now a spot to grab a real slice in downtown Walnut Creek.
More photos after the jump…

The Sacramento-based restaurant Broderick Roadhouse is opening today in downtown Walnut Creek where the popular diner Hubcaps used to be. According to their Facebook page they even have a small section of hubcaps hanging on the wall which is a great idea. Check out the Walnut Creek menu here (scroll down). The photos of the inside below show a completely updated and new look with bar serving alcoholic drinks.
From their website:
Broderick Walnut Creek is located in the heart of Downtown Walnut Creek, in the space formerly occupied by a historic eatery, Hubcap’s Diner. The new location features an over-the-top design and build out, featuring elements of Walnut Creek’s history and artwork by Sacramento artist, Shaun Burner. Broderick Walnut Creek is set to be the area’s destination location for scratch made comfort food, craft beer and cocktails! Brunch is served on Saturdays & Sundays.
3517 Mt. Diablo Blvd, Lafayette
In March we learned that heart rate monitoring gym Orangetheory Fitness would be coming to Lafayette and the “Coming Soon” signage is now up and you can sign up for “Founders” rates now. According to a comment on their Facebook page it will be several months before they open. Check for updates on their Facebook page here. If they offer use of the parking lot next door that would be a huge member perk as it’s becoming harder to find parking with new restaurants and stores opening up in nearby Park Plaza.
Learn more about the Orangetheory workout here.

Thanks to a reader for sending word (and photo) about a new restaurant opening at the Avalon apartment complex located near the Pleasant Hill BART station in Walnut Creek. It will be called En Route and is set to open right across from the Peruvian restaurant Parada. The other restaurant will be opening down the block next to where Zoom Room used to be and will be called Hops & Scotch. Stay tuned…
Now that it’s getting nicer out and with Memorial Day weekend ahead of us, what is your favorite restaurant for outdoor dining?
