356 Park St, Moraga
A new restaurant called Sushi Fighter has opened where Kirin Sushi used to be next to the Rheem Movie Theatre in Moraga. Check out their menu here. I think I’d try this place out for the name alone!
Pleasant Hill Shopping Center
Thanks to a reader for sending word about construction going on in the Pleasant Hill Shopping Center in front of Home Goods. Although there is a Starbucks in Target according to various sources there will definitely be a Starbucks here as well. In addition, although it hasn’t been confirmed, one employee at Home Goods mentioned Chipotle opening as well. Stay tuned…
Those of you who may remember the Soup Nazi episode on Seinfeld may not realize that it was based on a real soup vendor who ran a soup take out spot called Soup Kitchen International. At the time the episode came out I was living in New York so of course I had to check it out. Unbelievably, they ran out of bread right after I got my order which I thought was hilarious. Anyway, the soup turned out to be unbelievably delicious and I haven’t had another bowl of soup that stands up to it, until now.
Last evening as I walking to a 3D printing class at the Walnut Creek library I passed by Main St. Kitchen and noticed a worker eating a bowl of soup outside before it got busy. It looked good so I ended up dropping in and ordering the same soup. It turned out to be fennel sausage soup and it was the most delicious soup I’ve had in ages. I couldn’t believe my luck and not only was it insanely good, it filled me up nicely. And at $7.50 for the bowl, this is possibly the best dining deal in all of Walnut Creek. Since this really is their soup of the day, you’ll have to drop by soon to order it. Check for menu updates on their Facebook page here.
I’ll be back for sure, and and no need to worry about attitudes like the Soup Nazi in New York, the waitress was very friendly and helpful.
Enjoy the Soup Nazi Seinfeld scene:
1415 Pine St, Walnut Creek
Last year we learned that a new brewery was coming to Walnut Creek called Farm Creek Brewing Company and although there have been some delays they are getting a lot closer to opening now and over the weekend they held a beer tasting event which featured a 3.9% session amber with rye beer called Favorite Daughter that was delicious. It had a ton of flavor and I can definitely see taking home a crowler of Favorite Daughter once they open. (Check out a photo of an unused crowler after the jump.)
They will also be offering a pale ale, pilsner, IPA, Scottish ale and an extra stout beer called Heather’s Limit. In addition to being a brewery which will sell to local restaurants and bars, there will also be a bar area with a 12 tap system and they’re planning on launching with about six beers. Check for updates on their Facebook page here and read more about the brewery here.
More photos of the inside after the jump…

Earlier this month we saw progress on the ice cream shop CREAM in Concord near Todos Santos Park and they will be having a grand opening this Saturday, March 5th according to their Facebook page here. Check out their menu here.
The Village, Walnut Creek
Last month we learned that Pacifc Bay Coffee Co. closed temporarily for remodeling at the corner of Newell Ave. and S. Main St, and diagonally across in the new Village development you can see the Starbucks “Coming Soon” sign up so it looks like this will be the first place to open in the new development. The is the same development where California Pizza Kitchen will be relocating to around the corner.
500 Hartz Ave, Danville
From Diablo Dish we learn that the Asian-fusion restaurant Amber Bistro has closed on Hartz Ave. in Danville. Stay tuned for a new “farm to table” restaurant called Almanac opening in this spot this spring and check out renderings of the inside on the architect’s Facebook page here.
1275 S. Main St, Walnut Creek
Thanks to everyone for pointing out this San Francisco Business Times article about Napa-based Gott’s Roadside opening their first East Bay location in downtown Walnut Creek by year’s end. Last November we learned that Fresh Choice closed and this is where Gott’s Roadside will open. Look for the remodeled building to provide more outdoor seating. I have enjoyed their soft serve ice cream many times when I’m in the Ferry Building in San Francisco and look forward to trying more dishes once they open here.
Downtown Pleasant Hill Shopping Center, Pleasant Hill
It was only last month we learned that Lizzy’s Pies opened in the Downtown Pleasant Hill Shopping Center where Sinful Bliss Cupcakes used to be, and now it looks like they are already gone from this spot. There is no Open sign nor much left inside.
