I recently stopped by for a peek inside the long awaited family restaurant The Cooperage American Grill which is scheduled to open this Sunday, March 2nd in downtown Lafayette. As expected, the remodel looks amazing with reclaimed wood from Petar’s being used throughout the restaurant.
Check out their dinner menu here. Brunch will be offered on March 15th (see menu here), with lunch available on March 24th (see menu here). Of interest is the Cooperage Burger, “8 oz. Angus burger, lettuce, tomato, pickle, red onion jam, toasted bun, Kennebec French fries” for $13. I can’t wait to try this! Reservations can be made on their website here.
From their website:
The Cooperage American Grille, locally owned by Lafayette Residents, Andrew and Merilee McCormick, is a rotisserie-inspired american grill. Chef Erik Hopfinger’s extensive menu features American favorites like slow roasted chicken prepared in a glass-encased rotisserie oven, New York steak, beef tenderloin, and our signature burger (made with our own meat grinder at the grill). The Cooperage also offers healthier options, including a selection of salad entreés made with local and organically grown ingredients.
The Cooperage is comfortable for families dining with children and features a large bar area with flat screen TV’s, 12 beers on tap, eight wine selections on tap, and vintage cocktail list.
The inside is huge, check out the bar area below:
Plenty of photos of the inside after the jump…

The spa Metamorphosis has closed in downtown Walnut Creek at the Mercer apartment complex. There are still quite a few salons on this block and Starbucks opened a few doors down yesterday.

Over the weekend I pulled into the new Arco gas station in Moraga to fill up. As I popped the gas tank cover I looked over directly across from me and see two guys standing next to their car smoking cigarettes right near the pump. Based on their demeanor I felt uncomfortable even looking at them so I did a long loop around them to get to the machine to pay. Then I walked back the same way and peeked at them again before selecting the grade and saw they were still smoking. Finally, I started pumping and waited far back from the pump. While pumping I envisioned one of the guys flicking his still smoldering cigarette butt in my direction engulfing me and the gas station in flames.
In my mind smoking and gas stations don’t mix but is it really a big deal? Should I have taken off immediately after seeing this or is the danger overblown? I don’t think it would have been a good idea to go up to them to inform them that smoking is not permitted near gas pumps unless I wanted to get hurt so that’s out of the question.
Back in December I noted that Edwards Luggage would be relocating from the backside of Broadway Plaza to a new Broadway Plaza spot next to Neiman Marcus and they are very close to reopening at this new location. The old location has now closed and now every store on the backside of Broadway Plaza has closed except for Banana Republic, which will open across the street in March.

Last November I noted that Starbucks may be coming to the Mercer and they opened today in the Mercer apartment complex in downtown Walnut Creek. Peeking inside I could see a long table (at the lower left in the photo below) and small circular tables further inside at left as well. I expected a coffee shop to open in the Mercer years ago so it’s good to finally see something open up over there. (Thanks to a reader comment about today’s opening.)
