Spotted at the Ygnacio Center in Walnut Creek.
Last week I featured one of the kitchens from the 15th annual Lafayette Juniors Kitchen tour and here is one more “kitchen of the day”. You can see more photos from the tour on the Lafayette Juniors Facebook page here.
This house was originally a horse ranch and the farmhouse setting was preserved for the remodel. From the tour description:
The farmhouse home is a sight to be seen. The refurbished vintage oven and stovetop lend a unique charm to the house. The kitchen prides an untraditional remodel of tiled counter tops and an alder wood island. Checker style kitchen floors add charm, balance and warmth to the house. The homeowners love to reuse materials and products: There is even a small old bathtub that is used as a flowerbed in the serene backyard.
The scene pictured below in the open area next to the kitchen is one of my favorites. Perfectly in keeping with the farmhouse style!

Smitten Ice Cream opened last week in downtown Lafayette in La Fiesta Square and I dropped by to see (and eat) ice cream made with liquid nitrogen. Wow, I’ve been to plenty of ice cream parlors but never witnessed ice cream being made like this! Check out their menu here. Since their ice cream is made to order they don’t offer samples and their selection is fairly limited. The Lafayette location currently offers four flavors: Tcho 60.5% chocolate, salted caramel, fresh mint chip and strawberry white balsamic (see menu below). In addition to handmade waffle cones they also offer sundaes and various toppings and sauces such as pistachio brittle and malt caramel.
One note, the smallest size listed on their menu is a “small” which is actually two scoops of ice cream. They also have a “munchkin” size which is one scoop for $3.50.

Back in January I noted that Southern California based Veggie Grill would be opening a new location in downtown Walnut Creek on Locust St. next to Anthropologie and Tender Greens and construction has now begun. Back then I pointed out that the small Nail Shop location was not included in the plans which I found strange but that has changed as the walls are gone so there will be more space available for seating which is great. Check out the Veggie Grill menu here.
Juicy Couture has closed in Broadway Plaza in downtown Walnut Creek as well as throughout the country as the brand (not the stores) has been sold to Authentic Brands Group. The stores itself are owned by the Kate Spade Company which also owns Lucky Brand Jeans and some former Juicy Couture locations are being turned into Kate Spade and/or Lucky Brand stores. More information at the Sacramento Business Journal here. Word on the street is a travel agency will be opening at this location. Stay tuned…
