Thanks to a reader for sending word: A new gym called Orangetheory Fitness will be opening in half of the old Mancini’s Sleepworld location on Locust St. in downtown Walnut Creek in mid December/early January. This gym features 60 minute trainer-led interval sessions and incorporates a heart rate monitor to maximize performance and recovery. Find out more about their sessions here. As you can see from the photo below contact them for a free 2 week class pass available before they officially open.
From their website:
The physiological theory behind the Orangetheory workout is known as “Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption,” or EPOC. By providing you with a heart-rate monitor and POD, we can monitor your 5-zone interval training sessions that we call the Orange 60. During the 60-minute workout, you will perform multiple intervals designed to produce 12 to 20 minutes of training at 84% or higher of your maximum heart rate, which translates to Zones 4/5. This program design produces workout “afterburn” effect, which is an increased metabolic rate for 24 to 36 hours after the workout. When combing the amazing workout with EPOC, our clients burn an average of 500 to 1200 calories.

The Italian restaurant Melo’s Pizza & Pasta is coming to Danville where Pasta Gondola used to be on San Ramon Valley Blvd. This will be their fourth location after Pleasant Hill, Brentwood and Livermore. Check out their Pleasant Hill menu here to get an idea of what will be offered.
According to the owner there will be additional offerings for the Danville location with the possibility of a full bar (in additon to beer and wine):
We will be doing the same NY style pizza that we’re known for but this location will feature a dome hearth oven where we will be doing Napoletana ish style pizza as well. The rest of our menu will have much in common with our other locations but we’re planning on revamping it a bit to cater to the community of Danville so expect some new dishes.
Has anyone tried their NY style pizza? As a pizza fan I can’t wait to try this place out!

6:00pmWhile past parades have featured marching bands and floats aplenty on the ground, this year’s parade is adding a new dimension – the air above the parade.
A Vietnam era Huey gunship helicopter will fly over the crowd as part of an Honor Detail provided by VFW AMVTS Post 29 and VFW Post 1351.
And three helicopters from the California Highway Patrol, Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office and Oakland Police will fly in unison toward the end of the parade.Other highlights include miniature horses, Star Wars characters, Rosie the Riveter and marching bands from six area high schools.
This Bicentennial Liberty Tree was spotted in Lafayette and was dedicated in 1974. It’s huge now! Does anyone know what street it’s located?
