Pressed Juicery Opens in Downtown Walnut Creek

September 14, 2015 11:30 am

1179A Locust St, Walnut Creek

Last month we learned that Pressed Juicery would be opening where Pinkberry used to be in Plaza Escuela in downtown Walnut Creek on Locust St. and they have now opened. Intriguingly, in addition to cold-pressed drinks, they also offer a frozen yogurt-esque/soft serve sorbet-esque option called FREEZE. Note that although it looks like frozen yogurt, it’s NOT frozen yogurt as it only uses the same ingredients in their cold-pressed drinks, no dairy and no added sugar. Thankfully they offer samples of any of their drinks and freeze flavors. I was doubtful about their freeze but I tried the vanilla and chocolate flavors and it was delicious! I ordered a vanilla freeze (see photo below). It comes with two toppings. I tried chocolate gogi berries and blueberries which was quite refreshing. Check out their drinks menu here and here, freeze menu here and freeze toppings menu here.

It’s unfortunate they removed the outdoor seating that Pinkberry had. I thought maybe that would be added later but the server mentioned that Pressed Juicery doesn’t offer any seating by design. Maybe it’s healthier drinking/eating while standing?

Last spring we learned that the organic fabric shop Monaluna would be opening on Mt. Diablo Blvd. in Walnut Creek and they will be opening this Wednesday, September 15th. I had a chance to get a preview of the inside and it looks amazing (don’t miss photos of the inside after the jump). In addition to their organic fabrics they also offer clothing from various designers based on Monaluna fabrics as well as jewelry, such as Sägen from Sweden, made from recycled porcelain, greeting cards and other hand-picked items (see some examples after the jump). Check out updates on their Facebook page here. I’ll be back for sure.

Plenty more photos of the inside after the jump….

Spotted in downtown Walnut Creek on Locust Street. My kid said this must be a really old sign, like from the olden days, the 1980s. 🙂

The building that features the Chinese restaurant Dragon’s Pond and the future Fuego Tequila Grill has finished up their external makeover in downtown Walnut Creek. This is what it looked like four years ago when the outside redevelopment was just beginning. Looks like Dragon’s Pond lost the paint battle in the middle.

Walnut Creek Police Opposes Proposed Winter Homeless Shelter – City Council Meeting this Evening to Discuss

September 8, 2015 2:00 pm

Via Google Maps

Last week we learned about concerns over a proposed winter homeless shelter at the Armory near Civic Park and the Iron Horse Trail in downtown Walnut Creek and it turns out that the Walnut Creek police opposes the location of this shelter. Read the complete police memorandum here (click the link and then attachment 6a at right) to find out why they are “concerned that the project will negatively impact our ability to protect the community.”

This evening, Sept. 8th, at 7pm, the city council will hold a, “special meeting to consider the Trinity Center’s request that the City enter into a license agreement with the State Military Department so Trinity Center may operate a winter nights homeless shelter at the Armory adjacent to Civic Park”.

Friday Question of the Day – Is Walnut Creek Boring?

September 4, 2015 8:30 am

A few days ago I posted about Tenderly: The Rosemary Clooney Musical coming to the Lesher Center for the Arts in downtown Walnut Creek which prompted one comment about, “Lesher options being directed for the over 70 crowd. Those of us who like more contemporary entertainment have to leave town”.

From Wikipedia:

“Tenderly” is a popular song published in 1946.

Since then, “Tenderly” has been recorded by many artists, but perhaps the best-known version was by Rosemary Clooney. Clooney’s recorded version reached only #17 on the Billboard magazine pop charts in early 1952, but it is more popular than the chart data would suggest, as is evidenced by the fact that Tenderly served as the theme song for Clooney’s 1956-1957 TV variety show. The song featured prominently in the 1953 film Torch Song.

Do you agree that entertainment options in Walnut Creek and surrounding areas are lacking, especially for younger, twenty-somethings? Do you head out to Berkeley, Oakland or San Francisco for entertainment? Or are the Lesher Center and Town Hall Theatre solid venues for all ages? Are there other venues you would recommend in this area that might appeal to a younger, hipper crowd?
