Last month I noted that Locust Street Deli & Cafe would be closing in downtown Walnut Creek and they have now closed. I wonder how soon the replacement Japanese restaurant will take before it opens in this location…

Yesterday I noted that a new dessert shop called Ice Monster is planning to open in the Nob Hill Shopping Center in Walnut Creek and I have some more information from the owner on what will be offered and a planned opening day of July 1st. The main offering will be shaved ice which is very exciting. I love snow cones so I’m sure I’m going to love this. Just in time for summer!
Email from the owner:
We are selling many kinds of desserts such as: ice cream, Belgian waffles, crepes, ice cream bread house (special), and shaved snow. Shave snow is our main product and it’s a new dessert that has been trending, but there are none in Walnut Creek. We are making flavored blocks of ice and we have a machine that will shave the block of ice into thin layers that drops down into a bowl. The layers become a snowy texture and we add toppings on it such as: condensed milk, fresh fruits, etc. It is much more healthier compared to ice cream and has a unique smooth texture. We are also selling many kinds of beverages such as: milk shakes, smoothies, and milk tea.

Thanks to a reader for sending word about a cold desserts place called Ice Monster opening up in Citrus Marketplace on Oak Grove Rd. next to the recently opened Mexican restaurant Taqueria el Molino. Based on signs in the windows they’ll be offering bubble milk tea and “flavored snow ice cream”. Not sure whether that’ll include shaved ice but that would great if it does. Stay tuned…

Back in April I noted that the Brewing Network-owned Hop Grenade Taproom & Bottleshop bar would be opening this spring in Concord next to Todos Santos Plaza and their signage is now up with an expected June opening according to their Facebook page:
We still don’t have a hard date for the soft opening (heh) but we hope to soon. Crazy how this construction business is a moving target, but such is life. We are working on it every single day and will post here first when we have a real date. Still looking like June is the best I can say…

Next door to Seoul Jung Korean BBQ in the Park ‘N’ Shop strip mall in Concord a new Japanese restaurant will be opening by the end of June called Seoul Jung Sushi Boat Japanese Bar & Grill. Obviously this is the same owner.
From an email:
Tender Greens Chef Sean Eastwood is hosting a private tour of the Walnut Creek Farmer’s Market (schedule and details below) and at the link: http://www.tendergreens.com/blog/717/walnut-creek-farmers-market-walk-cooking-class-and-lunch
WHY is Tender Greens doing this? Because Sean Eastwood loves teaching and sharing the joy of food and cooking. Tender Greens wants want to give their guests a fun way to try different things at the farmer’s market that they might not get on their own, taste the different and get a chef’s perspective of the farmer’s market. There are so many different flavors and varieties of stone fruit, heirloom tomatoes, melons and berries but most people are only familiar with a few of them. They want to encourage people to enjoy and explore everything that the farmer’s market has to offer and teach them how to cook in interesting new ways.

Smitten Ice Cream opened last week in downtown Lafayette in La Fiesta Square and I dropped by to see (and eat) ice cream made with liquid nitrogen. Wow, I’ve been to plenty of ice cream parlors but never witnessed ice cream being made like this! Check out their menu here. Since their ice cream is made to order they don’t offer samples and their selection is fairly limited. The Lafayette location currently offers four flavors: Tcho 60.5% chocolate, salted caramel, fresh mint chip and strawberry white balsamic (see menu below). In addition to handmade waffle cones they also offer sundaes and various toppings and sauces such as pistachio brittle and malt caramel.
One note, the smallest size listed on their menu is a “small” which is actually two scoops of ice cream. They also have a “munchkin” size which is one scoop for $3.50.

Back in January I noted that Southern California based Veggie Grill would be opening a new location in downtown Walnut Creek on Locust St. next to Anthropologie and Tender Greens and construction has now begun. Back then I pointed out that the small Nail Shop location was not included in the plans which I found strange but that has changed as the walls are gone so there will be more space available for seating which is great. Check out the Veggie Grill menu here.
