Hubcaps Diner Closing in Walnut Creek – Will Reopen as Broderick Roadhouse by April

December 28, 2015 11:30 am

1548 Bonanza St, Walnut Creek

Thanks to a reader for sending word that Hubcaps Diner is closing in downtown Walnut Creek. This Sunday, January 3rd will be its final day so stop by to reminiscence about old times while drinking a malted milkshake. Keep in mind that there is still Mel’s Diner (same owner), located a few blocks from Hubcaps if you’re hankering for that 50’s diner style.

The same owner and staff will be back by April with the Sacramento based restaurant Broderick Roadhouse. Check out their menu here. In addition to lunch and dinner they will also offer breakfast. Looks like with the new Lyric apartments coming next year across the street from Hubcaps they want to take things a bit more upscale. Their goodbye letter notes:

In just a few short months we will be re-opening as BRODERICK ROADHOUSE. Our menu will consist of omelets, skillets, eggs benedicts and hotcakes for brunch, but will feature a wide variety of burgers, salads and upscale bistro sandwiches.

When a Sale isn’t a Sale – Restoration Hardware in Walnut Creek

December 28, 2015 8:30 am

****UPDATE**** Based on the comments below I decided to go back and this time the sales people did state that the towels were on sale. Over the weekend not only did two sales people insist that the towels were not on sale, but one of them explained in great detail why they were not on sale. I’m not thrilled about having to go back but I applaud her creative story telling!

Like many others who shopped for after-Christmas sales, I stopped by Restoration Hardware in downtown Walnut Creek and noticed these signs plastered everywhere:

AFTER THE GIVING
YOURS FOR THE TAKING
SAVE 25-75%
ON EVERYTHING IN STOCK

When I asked a salesperson about what percent off the towels were she indicated they weren’t on sale. I pointed out the sign indicating “everything in stock” and she said “stock” refers to “furniture”. How silly of me! I thought in stock meant products available in-store. I guess that’s how marketing works at Restoration Hardware.

In doing the aforementioned, The “Krazy Popular” cuisine and 4.5 Yelp Stars Culture of The 310 will rise again at the Mad Oak and do so on Feb. 1, 2016.

Big Fat Year End Kiss Off Comedy Show at Lesher Center on Dec 26th in Walnut Creek

December 23, 2015 4:30 pm

Big Fat Year End Kiss Off Comedy Show:

Lesher Center for the Arts
1601 Civic Dr, Walnut Creek
Saturday, December 26, 2015
8:00 PM | $30

For the 23rd consecutive year, Will Durst and his merry band of pranksters are proud to take their end-of-the-year comedy extravaganza to the Bay Area’s far-flung nooks and crannies, bringing their hilarious New Year’s celebration to the people.
Starting the day after Christmas through January 3rd, the troupe vows to lampoon, satirize, mock, scoff, scorn, taunt, tease, rib, ridicule, josh, jibe and kid the personalities and events of the past year and do it with a modicum of taste.
The Big Fat Year End Kiss Off Comedy Show features a riotously uproarious collection of skits, sketches, and stand- up, all focused on the year of our Lord 2015. Some calendars are less conducive as subjects of humourosity, but what with Kim Davis giving a Confederate flag to Pope Francis after hacking Hillary’s email to discover her position on the NAACP white lady who pretended she was black, (according to Brian Williams), this year has been especially fecund. Lush like a tropical rain forest.
Continuing a holiday tradition as hallowed as the coal in Donald Trump’s stocking and as welcome as an air freshener in the Bohemian Club’s outhouse following Chili Night, The Big Fat Year End Kiss Off Comedy Show consists of 6 comics, 9 cities, 10 shows and 3,467 laughs. Complete info at: www.willdurst.com. Like us on Facebook!
SIX COMICS
Will Durst, (willdurst.com), Johnny Steele, (johnnysteele.com) Debi Durst and Michael Bossier (Deb and Mike), Mari Magaloni and last but not least, the beguiling Arthur Gaus, Esq.

Pietisserie Holiday Popup Pie Shop Opens in Downtown Lafayette

December 23, 2015 11:30 am

La Fiesta Square, Lafayette

In October the bakery Cake. closed in La Fiesta Square in Lafayette and now Oakland-based Pietisserie has opened a holiday popup shop through December 31st. Pietisserie recently appeared on the Cooking Channel show Unique Treats and is becoming more popular throughout the country; Check out photos of the inside and their menu after the jump. I talked with owner Jaynelle St. Jean who indicated that her favorite holiday pie is definitely the eggnog cream pie. I tried the grapefruit pie with some trepidation as I typically go for standard apple pie but this was seriously delicious. The real deal! Word has gotten around as they were already completely sold out when I dropped by so you may want to call in advance to see what’s available. I know I’ll be back. Who knows, they may end up staying in Lafayette permanently if things work out… They also offer Red Bay Coffee from Oakland.

From their website:

PieTisserie began after San Francisco native Jaynelle St. Jean staged a window of her mother’s home as an iconic country window, with homemade pies set out to cool. Compelled to create her own small town in the city, she gave away slices to passersby willing to eat with neighbors. Jaynelle launched PieTisserie, making it her mission to fill the need for unique and delicious pies, and to remind people of the importance of pleasant surprises close to home via her Random Acts of Sweetness.

Check out photos of the inside and menu after the jump…
