Thanks to a reader for sending word that the baby store DayOne is closing on April 12th in downtown Walnut Creek. This means within the past four months every single children’s store has closed in downtown Walnut Creek and Lafayette. The Right Start closed in December, Giggle closed in February, and Tulip also closed in February in Lafayette. Is Buy Buy Baby to blame which opened in Pleasant Hill or are there other factors causing baby stores to close? Are people having less babies recently? What’s going on?!

Through Saturday, April 27thThe 39 Steps is a melodrama adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 film byAlfred Hitchcock. Patrick Barlow wrote the adaptation, based on the original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon of a two-actor version of the play. Barlow had originally intended to portray the character of Richard Hannay, but focused solely on rewriting the original version.[1]
The play’s concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 adventure film The 39 Steps to be performed with a cast of only four. One actor plays the hero, Richard Hannay, an actress (or sometimes actor) plays the three women with whom he has romantic entanglements, and two other actors play every other character in the show: heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object. This often requires lightning fast quick-changes and occasionally for them to play multiple characters at once. Thus the film’s serious spy story is played mainly for laughs, and the script is full of allusions to (and puns on the titles of) other Alfred Hitchcock films, including Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo and North by Northwest.
Back in August I noted the temporary closing of the Shell gas station on Mt. Diablo Blvd. near the entrance to Highway 24 and now it has reopened after being completely reconstructed. This is the most convenient gas station for me and probably many others so I’m glad it’s finally back.
In February I noted that Max Studio closed in Broadway Plaza and now Brookstone will be opening in its place. This Brookstone will be located at 1224 Broadway Plaza, a few stores down from Nordstrom, right next to Janie and Jack. Does anyone remember when Sharper Image used to be in Broadway Plaza? I hope Brookstone can last longer.

9:00amWalnut Creek’s annual egg hunt for kids of all ages will be hosted this year by the Equestrian Center of Walnut Creek with help from local youth organizations including Clayton Valley High School Cheer and Dance and Contra Costa County 4H.
Back in February I noted that the women’s clothing store Threads Consignment had moved from their Locust St. location behind the Kitchen Table to a spot next to Norf London and now the previous location will be replaced by a collectible bookseller according to a source I’ve spoken with. Stay tuned…
Spotted on N. Main St. in downtown Walnut Creek, this red convertible bears a striking resemblance to this car of the day from last week.
