7:00pm – 8:30pm | FreeCome see Alaska through the eyes and lens of botanist, photographer, and author Yulan Tong. Yulan’s presentation will feature photos of the Inland Passage, Denali, Katmai, Glacier Bay National Park and more.
For Yulan, Alaska is a land of surprises and contradictions. She witnessed native peoples building traditional totems, yet traveling around by airplane. She saw fishermen sending their catches to both rustic smoke houses and modern canneries. Yulan was impressed by the contrast of slow growing, small trees in a land of fast growing giant cabbages. She’ll tell us of her canoe trip that required a quick detour because of fighting bears.
Everyone is welcome and no reservations are necessary.

Back in May we learned that the House of Beads spot in downtown Walnut Creek was up for lease and they are now closing at the end of February. One person working there mentioned that they’d like to relocate so check out their website here for updates. Could the parking meter changes made last year in downtown Walnut Creek be affecting local businesses?

7:30pmFrom Magnolia Pictures, it’s Sweden’s entry and top contender for this year’s foreign language Academy Award. Mountain Shadow has snagged this pre-home release you won’t find in our local theaters either! Says Michael Philips of the Chicago Tribune, “’Force Majeure’” is both funny and sad, often in the same glance-averted instant. See it with someone you’d trust to stick around in an avalanche. It becomes a recreational nightmare, driven (and riven) by panicky male behavior under duress.” Rated R – 118 min

Back in November we learned that CorePower Yoga would be coming to downtown Walnut Creek and they will be opening next month in February. They have a “Founding Black Tag Member” deal through February 12th.
From their website:
Located on the northwest side of N. Main street Cypress and Duncan Street, the Walnut Creek studio is easily accessible from Interstate 680. This studio houses two large and luxurious yoga rooms as well as a range of amenities including an additional exercise room, changing rooms with showers and private lockers. This studio also features a full retail boutique showcasing men’s & women’s active wear and accessories

The wait is finally over as Veggie Grill opens today in downtown Walnut Creek. It has a nice design as you can see by the dynamic wall in the photo below. Interestingly the spot where the nail salon used to be is available for lease so this is quite a narrow restaurant. Check out their menu here. I tried the Bombay Bowl and Crispy Cauliflower which both tasted great.

Back in May we learned that a new Japanese bistro would be coming to downtown Walnut Creek where Locust Street Deli used to be and at the time I noted that I, ” wouldn’t be surprised if the new restaurant featured yakitori rather than sushi.” Sure enough, the new name of the restaurant is Izakaya Jun! I love izakaya and with Hiroshi Ramen having recently opened around the corner, downtown Walnut Creek could turn into a destination spot for Japanese comfort food. Stay tuned…
The tag line is “Real Japanese Food & Sake Bar”. I’m not sure what “real” Japanese food is. As opposed to fake Japanese food?

Over the weekend Broadway Plaza posted signs in the fountain area with their Code of Conduct. Those who “refuse to comply with the Code will be asked to leave”. One point stuck out to me as a parent of a young child. Skipping is banned in Broadway Plaza. When my kid is in a good mood, he is incapable of not skipping, so I worry. If I notice him skipping while we stroll through the Plaza, should I say to him, “junior, you’re going to have to cut out the skipping; that’s against the rules, buddy.” Or should I risk getting kicked out as he merrily skips and hops about? Oh, the humanity! 🙂
