The Orchards at Walnut Creek
First comes the pizza, then you know burgers can’t be far behind. In May we learned that Mod Pizza would be coming to the new Orchards at Walnut Creek shopping center anchored by a new Safeway which closed at the Encina Grande shopping center across the street last year, and we now have learned that Southern California-based Burger Lounge will be opening possibly their first Northern California location here based on their current locations. Note that the above photo will not be the actual building where they’ll be located but since no signage has been posted yet I posted the latest look of the general area where the shopping center will be.
Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek
The cycling studio SoulCycle will be opening their first East Bay location when they open next month in Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek near the Macy’s parking garage. This means that downtown Walnut Creek will go from having no cycling studios a few years ago to three. In 2014, Cycle Scape opened on Mt. Diablo Blvd, and FlyWheel opened last year on N. Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek
Back in May we learned that the furniture store Arhaus would be opening this month on the backside of Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek, and as you can see in the above photo, the signage is now up and their website still indicates a July grand opening. The store will be located on two floors.
Encina Grande, Walnut Creek
Lots of progress at the newly remodeled Encina Grande shopping Center in Walnut Creek at the corner of Ygnacio Valley Rd. & Oak Grove Rd. with the PetSmart “Coming Soon” signage now up. Previous tenants such as Rocco’s Ristorante Pizzeria are sporting new signs and the Whole Foods building looks finished from the outside.

From the Walnut Creek PD:
On [07/16/16 at 2203 hours], the Walnut Creek Police Department (WCPD) responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian hit and run collision on the 200 block of Wooten Drive in which the pedestrian sustained minor injury. A witness to the hit and run attempted to confront the suspect but was nearly run over by the suspect vehicle and also sustained minor injury. A short time later, a WCPD officer located the suspect vehicle on Parkside Drive just west of Hillside Ave. The suspect vehicle collided head-on with the patrol officer’s SUV causing significant damage to both vehicles. The suspect exited his vehicle and tried to hide in some nearby bushes. Several other officers responded and the suspect actively resisted officers’ attempts to take him into custody. Police tasers and a bean-bag shot gun were deployed in an effort to get the suspect to comply. A Police K-9 was also deployed and was stabbed several times by the suspect with an unknown object. Ultimately, officers were able to take the suspect into custody for multiple felony charges. The suspect was transported to the hospital for injuries.
The WCPD officer involved in the collision sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and was also transported to the hospital. The WCPD K-9 was transported to the veterinarian to receive emergency medical care and is expected to fully recover.

10:00am – 4:00pmThe annual Chevron Family Theatre Festival welcomes the community to a day of affordable, high quality family entertainment. The City of Walnut Creek, the Lesher Center for the Arts, the Diablo Regional Arts Association, and San Ramon–based Chevron work closely to transform the Lesher Center and the street in front of the Center into a day-long festival of fun, arts, and entertainment for families and visitors.
Each year, thousands of adults and children enjoy more than two dozen professional performances in the Lesher Center’s three theaters, in the lobbies, and right outside. Events outside are free; performances inside the Center’s three theatres are just $5 per person and run 30-60 minutes long and are appropriate for all ages.

On [07/14/16 at 16:54], the Walnut Creek Police Department (WCPD) responded to the public parking garage at 1390 N. Broadway regarding a subject who was rummaging through an unlocked vehicle. The reporting party scared the subject away and called police. Officers arrived and located the suspect driving a stolen vehicle south on N. Broadway. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle but the suspect accelerated and fled westbound on Highway 24 at speeds of 85mph. Officers pursued the suspect into Lafayette where the pursuit terminated in front of the Whole Foods grocery store at 3052 Mt. Diablo Blvd. Officers then chased the suspect through the Whole Foods parking lot. During the foot chase, the suspect threw a chair at an officer which struck him in the leg causing a deep laceration. A citizen, who witnessed the foot pursuit, assisted officers in taking the suspect into custody. The injured officer was treated at the hospital and later released. The suspect was transported to Martinez Detention Facility (MDF) and booked on seven felonies and two misdemeanors.
