10:00am | FreeJuly 4th is an Orinda tradition started by the Orinda Association in the early 1980s as a way to celebrate not only Independence Day, but also to celebrate “community.” Thousands of citizens gather on this special day to not only watch or participate in the parade, but also attend the numerous other events available throughout the day. On July 4th there are events for every age group starting with the annual Pancake Breakfast, flag raising ceremony, fun run, parade, live music, food, games and booths in the park following the parade. Over the weekend the gift shop ECHO Grove, featuring a “curated collection of handmade goods” from the bay area and elsewhere in the United States opened in Orinda Theatre Square. There are various sections such as housewares, women’s goods, jewelry, kids, electronic accessories (such as iPad stands) and men’s goods; each item displays a small card with the artist’s name, location and description explaining the item further in-depth which I appreciated. Check out their Facebook page here and website here. The closeup photos below show off some of the beautiful work featured throughout the store.

Thanks to a reader for sending word that a new Burmese restaurant called The Refined Palate (the owner helped start Burma Superstar in San Francisco in the 1970s) has opened in Orinda across from the library. Check out their menu here. Any must-try dishes? According to an employee I spoke with they don’t have their liquor license yet so it’s BYOB, no corkage fee.
From their website:
We serve unique Burmese cuisine. This includes dishes from various regions of the Southeast Asian country of Burma (now officially known as Myanmar). The diversity of Myanmar’s cuisine has also been contributed to by the myriad of local ethnic minorities.
