The other night I had a chance to check out the eagerly anticipated Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar in the Willows Shopping Center (near the UFC Gym) in Concord at a preview party and wow is this place cool. With almost 8,000 square feet in space the Rocky Mountain aesthetic looks amazing. In addition there is a huge bar area with 9 flat-screen TVs nearby. Local brews from Black Diamond, 21st Amendment, Drake’s and dozens more are available on tap in addition to Lazy Dog branded brews. They also have 25 hand-selected beers by the bottle. Food-wise the spicy Moroccan chicken & cous cous had a real kick that was a pleasant surprise, as was the Jerk Chicken Crisp appetizer which was delicious. Check out the menu here.

With reasonable prices and generous, tasty portions, I’ll definitely be back with my family to try out some more dishes and local brews.
Plenty of photos including the Moroccan chicken dish after the jump….
Saturdays from 11am – 3pm the Off the Grid mobile food market comes to the parking lot of the Willows Shopping Center in Concord where 10 food trucks are stationed offering various cuisines with live music playing in the background. As you can see in the photo below, a KoJa Kitchen food truck which has been featured on the Food Network was extremely popular. Get in line early though as it fills up quickly. As I took this photo a really long line wrapped behind me for KoJa. Anyone been here? Besides KoJa Kitchen what other food trucks do you like?

Thanks to a tip from a reader I was alerted to the possibility of Hobby Lobby opening a new location in Concord and have confirmed this is indeed happening and the new store at 1280 Willow Pass Rd. will open in late February or March, 2014. This location used to be Tower Records and Sport Chalet but Guitar Center will remain open next door.
Hobby Lobby’s nearest location is in Antioch so this Concord location will be a lot more convenient for those in the East Bay. Note they are closed on Sundays by, “honoring the Lord in all we do by operating the company in a manner consistent with biblical principles.” Check out their website here. How does Hobby Lobby compare to Michael’s Arts & Crafts in Pleasant Hill? I imagine it’s way bigger?

Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar is planning to open their first Northern California location next month at the Willows Shopping Center where El Torito used to be. Check out their menu here.
From an email:
The restaurant, Lazy Dog’s first location in Northern California, marks a milestone for the family-run restaurant that celebrated its 10th anniversary in August. With its serious bar program and forward-thinking menu that blends comforting classics with globally-inspired fare, the ambitious family-friendly restaurant has become a fixture in the Southern California communities where they were founded. Simms hopes to continue that local community focus in Concord, starting with a pre-opening fundraiser to benefit the Mount Diablo Music Education Foundation during the restaurant’s invite-only preview events.
Local breweries such as Drake’s Brewing Company, 21st Amendment, North Coast, and Anchor Brewing Company will be among the extensive selection of craft beers on tap, and the restaurant will also be working with local vendors like Laura Chanel Goat Cheese in Sonoma County and General Produce, a third generation family-run company in Sacramento.
