Thank you to all veterans who have served our country!
The City of Walnut Creek will pay tribute to veterans on Friday, November 11 at 11 a.m. in the Hoffman Theatre at the Lesher Center for the Arts. The free ceremony is open to the public.
Keynote speaker Colonel Anita Fligge of the United States Air Force Reserve, will share her experiences in aeromedical evacuation, where nurses and medical technicians provide constant care to wounded warriors when they are being flown home to safety.
Col Fligge has deployed in support of operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait. Col Fligge is assigned to the Pentagon, where she assists the Director in the Medical Directorate office in matters of health policy affecting the Air Force Reserve, and serves on the Board of Directors, Air Force Reserve Nurse Corps. In her civilian capacity, she works at John Muir Health in Walnut Creek.
The ceremony will also feature the “Pets for Vets” program created by Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, which matches carefully selected shelter dogs with veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or emotional trauma.
The Pets for Vets program provides powerful therapeutic and practical benefits for veterans through the quiet, unconditional love of a pet, reducing anxiety, depression and isolation.
Mayor Loella Haskew will lead the ceremony. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the Walnut Creek Concert Band under the direction of Harvey Benstein.

Thanks to everyone for sending word that the popular Italian restaurant Ottavio, which opened back in 2012, has closed in downtown Walnut Creek. Last week’s question of the day was about Italian restaurants so check it out for ideas on other Italian restaurants worth checking out.

I was walking by the Lesher Center in downtown Walnut Creek the other day when I happened upon a ceremony for the Walnut Creek Free Ride buses going electric. They used to be diesel. Can anyone tell me why are they called “trolleys”? They look like buses to me. Is that a gimmick?
From the County Connection electric bus page:
The electric trolley’s were built locally by Gillig and are the first electric buses to come off their line. These trolley’s also represent another first – a partnership between Gillig, BAE(manufacturer of the electric power system) and WAVE (the manufacturer of the inductive charging station).
The new electric trolleys will replace the existing diesel trolleys that are used on the popular Route 4 Free Downtown Trolley in Walnut Creek. The City of Walnut Creek provides operating assistance for the service, allowing passengers to ride for free. The buses run between the Walnut Creek BART station, downtown Walnut Creek, and the Broadway Plaza seven days a week.

In addition to boba teas and smoothies they will also be offering fried snacks such as popcorn chicken. Check out their menu here. The inside styling looks great, check it out!

Thanks to foodhoe for pointing out that the LA style street food restaurant 310 Eatery has moved back to downtown Walnut Creek for the third time in the restaurant Library on Main of all places. Previously they were located within Redux Lounge on Locust St. and before that they were in their own restaurant where Ramen Hiroshi is now. For a close-up of the menu below click here. I think I’m going to have to go back for another Tokyo Po’Boy soon…
