Earlier this month I noted that the Italian restaurant Picolo Napoli would be opening in Orinda Theatre Square and this weekend I dropped in to try out their pizza, salads and gelato and it was really good. Check out their menu here. Diablo Dish also has more information here. In addition to their online menu they also offer appetizers such as a caprese mozzarella salad, house salad and housemade bread sticks with roasted garlic and Parmesan.
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you may know that I’m a huge pizza fan so how does it stack up? To me this reminds me of a traditional New York pizza, albeit a bit thinner. Mostly local ingredients are used including San Marzano and grape tomatoes and a six-cheese mix.
As for the gelato, mmmm. Very creamy and rich. The salted caramel flavor is insanely good.
Playful art on the walls:

Bar area located at the far end:

Piccolo Napoli is located at 2 Theatre Square across from Republic of Cake in downtown Orinda.

Drop into the boutique ReChic 101 in Orinda Village and you’d think you’re in Berkeley. Fun to browse around. The store design is quite eclectic. In business for a year and a half this boutique caters to a younger crowd including teenagers. They offer both consignment and new clothes and also have plenty of unique gift and room decor items for sale. From their Facebook page:
ReChic 101 – is a unique spot to find something that’s useful and fun for ages ~13 and up… way up! Repurpose unused clothes, find something unique for your space, hang out in the social lounge or join a group to learn almost anything from hobbyists & experts. Got a skill? Show it off or teach it here. ReChic 101 welcomes the tried, the true and the ever changing you!
ReChic 101 is located at 101 Orinda Way in North Orinda.

Live music every Fri. @ 8PM – great sign by the Mexican restaurant Barbacoa in downtown Orinda.

Last month I noted that Bonfire Pizzeria closed in the Orinda Theatre Square with a new pizzeria to replace it and it turns out that Piccolo Napoli will be opening here in Orinda on June 29th. According to Diablo Dish they will be “emphasizing family-friendly fare with a focus on thin-crust, Italian-style pizza”.
From their website:
Peter & Maria Eberle, long-time Lamorinda residents, have lived in New York, Chicago and Europe where they have sampled countless variations of pizza and created many of their own. Together with their four teenagers; Alex & Hailey Eberle and Aja & Ariel Adair they bring to Orinda their love of pizza, pasta and gelato. Come join us this summer for Orinda’s newest family friendly restaurant in Theatre Square!
As a pizza lover I can’t wait to try this place out!

Bruns Amphitheater
100 California Shakespeare Theater Way
Thursday, May 30th, 2013
8:00pm | $35Hailed as a “boisterous, rollicking, surreal…journey into American history” by the Mail Tribune during its sold-out run at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, American Night brings the groundbreaking work of San Francisco’s iconic Culture Clash to Cal Shakes for the very first time. Drawing equally from pop culture and Shakespeare to mint a new kind of history play, writer Richard Montoya has crafted a theatrically deft, story-rich exploration of the immigrant experience that is as heartrending as it is heartbreakingly hilarious.

Bonfire Pizzeria in the Orinda Theatre Square has closed according to a sign in the window (see below). When they first opened I was a big fan of their pizzas although I think their ingredients changed over time. Word on the street is that a new pizzeria will be opening in this location over the summer. Stay tuned…
